What’s the best setup. May start planning for a few colonies at the farm by the barns. Houses or gourds, what’s best. We have a lot of swallows that nest under the Trace underpass.

I just ordered a Troyer’s Deluxe with horizontal gourds. Look here to get started: https://www.purplemartinproducts.com/

Appreciate that. I can see this being as addictive as bee keeping

Not to derail this thread, but hummingbirds make a similar migration.

Not to derail this thread, but hummingbirds make a similar migration. Correct, as do nearly all waterfowl. However, the Purple Martin is the only one who relies on humans to provide shelter for nesting.

I would encourage anyone who has the skill set, to build their own gourd rack. You can install a much stronger pole than you can buy from due to weight and size restraints when it comes to shipping the poles. My newest racks will use 3" square tubing with 1/4" thick walls for poles. I have some 2" SCH 40 galvanized pipe for poles too, but it sways too much in the wind for my liking. I prefer the Troyer Vertical gourds to the horizontals, because they have more "attic" space, allowing more heat to rise and escape from the gourd. If you order a gourd rack from Troyer, upsize to the 3" pole.

I have an adult female here today with a geolocator on her. Now for the "fun" of trapping her and removing the geo.

I have a bird house at my dock it is 10 feet up on a pole. I have 13 martins in it right now. They need to have a 2 inch hole at least that’s what they prefer

Well thanks to Fur I just beat up my Visa lol My wife and I just retired to my place here in SE Bama and have been busy making it our home. We had gotten the yard birds happy with feeders, multiple hummingbird feeders waiting for the birds to arrive and have long term active bluebird nests. The wife unit has been making some noise about a Martin colony so this post motivated me to break out the wallet and get a surprise for her. A Troyer 18 gourd super k combo is on the way. Gotta take care of my feathered friends since I now live on Byrd Nest Farm.

One I noticed and was able to free the martin shortly after it became entrapped, another went unnoticed while we were away and the bird entrapped died along with the babies trapped inside.

They can be cut into a natural gourd too. I have so many Starlings here that I would never be able to have a colony with round holes.

Here's a list of most of the SREH. The "Duke's Modified Excluder" is my favorite. It use to be known as a WDC entrance, but Duke Snyder has a patent on the Excluder design entrances and he threatened to sue Willie Conley for using the similar style entrance. I've cut many of those entrances into natural gourds and they work great. https://ontariopurplemartins.ca/attracting/

Gotta take care of my feathered friends since I now live on Byrd Nest Farm. You'll fall in love with them. Another plus of being a Martin landlord is killing House Sparrows and Starlings. Both are invasive species from Europe. They are not protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Both will kill native cavity nesting birds to take over their nest. My trigger finger stays sharp and ready because I shoot them all year round. I am fortunate to be able to use a .22 with subsonic ammo here on our farm. I don't have to worry about hitting a neighbors house. I killed 4 Starlings and one HOSP yesterday and one HOSP this morning.

I will look them up and keep an eye out. Good excuse to go out and get a nice .22 with good scope.

Another update. This map was generated by Kyle Shepard from Banding Coalition of the Americas. They are the ones who are licensed to do this work. The round trip mileage for the migration, not counting stopovers or miles flown on the wintering grounds was over 9500 miles. It’s mind boggling to think that a bird that weighs 55-60 grams can fly that far, multiple times. quick image upload

He really wanted to get back "home" to Alabama . It took him about four months to make it to South America but only one to get back to Fur's sanctuary in Alabama. This is all very interesting .

Has anyone seen a pair nest in anything other than a man made structure? Do they use tree hollows or ???
