I am the prez of mine, and it frustrates me that I basically have 2 other guys who work. I told them last fall we should just charge a turn key price for people who want to hunt. Trying to get people to come out and work, is frustrating. They don't bring out stands, they don't build shooting houses. They show up on a couple of work days and feel like they have done their part.

First year I had a new lease only had two rules. There were 1.) Obey all state game laws and number two was 2.) Treat other members as you would want to be treated, i.e. The golden rule.. Second year had to print out a whole page of rules addressing different stuff and drama.

Club rules can be difficult to agree on. Clubs usually work better with one person in charge (an elected dictator).

It's always amazed me that no one had time to help work, but had plenty of time to hunt. Now me, my brother in law, and my good buddy got our own place, we all work together well.

Love a good hunting story, love my family and friends. Some people you can't, but acted like do.

Running a large hunting club is like herding cats!! You can charge whatever amount of money you want to recruit what you think would be better members. Don't believe that for a minute!!! I can tell you from personal experience that isn't true. Yes, you will end up with some great members, but all it takes is one jackleg!! I will never again be in charge of running a large hunting club. It's a full-time job if your goal is to ensure the rules are followed and drama kept at a minimum. Most members never have time to help with the work, but once season opens, they seem to have unlimited free time to hunt. It absolutely sucked the fun out of hunting the property for me personally. I ran a good club, but as noted it was a full-time job for two people to manage the property and members.

Like some of the others have stated, find a place that you can lease or buy with very few people involved and it's more enjoyable!

Running a club sucks. In a nutshell the only way I see that it works is a dictatorship, no vote system that is upfront, and honest with set rules.

As far as getting members to work. Couple things that I have seen work. Set missed work day fees to high $$.Create a list of completed work days per member. In ascending order, the members that complete the most work days get first dibs on signing out opening weekend of bow and rifle season. Those members that opt to sit at home all offseason and not participate will have to deal with the leftovers for those first couple weeks.

My club rules are pretty simple:
Nobody else is allowed to hunt. If I need some help with work, I'll pay for it.

We have two rules.

#1. No writing on the walls.

#2. Obey all rules.

LUCK:::; When presistence, dedication, perspiration and preparation meet up with opportunity!!!

Dictatorship is the only way. My hunting partner and I keep the members down to the bare minimum and pay the lions share of the bills. We have 3 other guys that have hunted with us several years and they know that we will give their money back before we argue about anything.

Our only rule is to use common damn sense. That can be hard on some folks..

I got in a club 4-5 yrs ago and they said we have a new member coming he'll be here any minute he says.he got there and heck I knew him fella I had worked with before.i told everyone don't expect much out of him.he showed up two hours late with a corn gravity feeder and two trail cams.he tells us where we should plant a field and takes off to hang his cameras.lmao this was 5 fellas on 1000acres so not really any rules for knuckle heads.

It's a very good point you don't know how people are till you hunt with them but i knew him and told them don't expect much.
Same folks that know you kill deer regular that hang a stand 100yards from yours and do zero scouting.gotta love hunting clubs.why I like low person count to land but leases are so stupid expensive now

The only way to stop club drama is getting out of the club. No way I'd go back to that crap. Cost me way more money but the payoff has been well worth it. Had a guy call me last September wanting to know how to plant a food plot. This guy has been in clubs over 20 years and has never helped with anything.

I have a hard time finding a club. I will work more than required . Buy more than my share of stands and shooting houses and have infinite corn supply . The catch is I’m gonna hunt, find, and kill a good deer every year . ( that last sentence seems to turn clubs off the most )

We have only one rule::
Rule number 1 is not to have any rules

When it get beyond that I’m done . Everyone in club is lifelong friends.
I have enough drama at work . Hunting is a hobby an suppose be fun not like a job.
None of us is as mad at them as times in past .

I had a very similar situation. 5-6 lifelong friends on 450 acres.

Rule #1. There is no rule list.
Rule#2. If you wish to add any rules to the list, refer to rule #1.

We had a lot of fun with that club. Nobody was upset about who was shooting what. No drama, Not one time.
