If I just wanted to drive and see the country, I would fly out and drive back. It is a long lonely highway west of Oklahoma City on I40. Truth , West of OK city across Texas panhandle to Albuquerque is some mighty lonesome highway .

google map for fastest way out there. on the way back if you want to see some beautiful desert scenery, take a right at El Paso, go to Marfa and drive till you see the Presidio, TX city limit sign, take a left and enjoy the drive thru the Big Bend. stop at the overlooks above the Rio Grande, check out the goat mayor of Lajitas, beats the hell out of the Interstate
