So I have been hunting the Cahaba WMA off and on for a while now, with no success. I decided to take advantage of the ML days last week, and went out on Thursday. That morning I went to a spot that I had run across a few years ago. Very secluded, good cover, and it just looked like a place that a deer would want to be. The only down side was that it was a good mile, if not more, from where I had to park. Anyway, when I got back in there I almost fell out. Scrapes, rubs, acorns, and droppings EVERYWHERE! It was the some of the most concentrated deer sign I have seen in a while. Saw 5 does that morning with my Triumph in hand and let them walk.
Went back in that afternoon with a buddy of mine to bow hunt. The pack in wasn't that bad. Walking in we found a scrape that had been made in the few hours I had been out of the woods. "Good sign" was all I could say, but I was pumped. We got in, got set up. After watching a couple squirrels most of the afternoon, I was about to lose hope. I heard something from across the river, and caught a deer moving my way. When it popped up the bank on my side, I saw horns! Problem was, it was walking dead on towards me, through the thickest stuff around me. He got 10 yards out and gave me a somewhat decent shot opportunity to I went for it. My heart sank as I watched my arrow pop a limb and fall to the ground. Dumb deer stopped, sniffed my arrow, stomped around for a minute, and walked right in to my main shooting lane. Got a second shot off, that hit paydirt. It was getting dark, and the shot was about 35 yards, but it looked good. I immediately got down and got on the track. bright red arrow, and good blood, I thought this was going to be easy. The deer ended running about 75 yards, and crossing the river. Thankfully, my buddy was wearing the right boots for the day and was able to get across and find him, just up the bank on the other side. But now it was dark, we were a mile from the truck, and this deer was dead on the other side of the river. After wrestling this deer back across the water, we gathered our stands and packs and set out to do a drag that neither of us were looking forward to. An hour and a half later, we FIANLLY made it back to the truck, with the deer. I am looking at game carts after that this for sure!
He was a good 9 pt. A main frame 8, with a kicker off his left G2. He also had a drop tine nub on his left side as well. Best we could figure, he was a good 3 1/2 yr old deer. Definately a good Alabama buck, and my first public land kill. I will try to post some pics tomorrow. Been too busy with work this weekend.
Thanks to Dixiehunter for all the help getting this deer recovered and out of the woods. Can't wait to do it again!

Does anyone know if they are going to update the Cahaba Management Area website with pics from the last gun hunt or anything killed during the 1st part of bow season?

When considering game carts,look for ones with bicycle tires. The ones with smaller tires are awfully hard to pullover trash in the woods. Limbs, stumps, rocks, mine from cabelas is terrible.
