The only thing handier than a tractor with a bucket…….is a HST tractor with a bucket👍🏼.
Drove gear shift tractors for years and then got a HST, won’t ever go back to a shuttle shift or manual shift for a general use (non large scale farming) tractor.
Have a 6 yr old Mahindra 38 Hp and have had zero issues with it.
You're only as good as your worst shot-

Tractors are like boobies and ding a lings. You always want a bigger one than you got!! Buy one as large as you can afford. . That may be the most true sentence ever written about anything.
If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14

I got a Kubota MX 5400 (HST) a few years ago and have really enjoyed It. I have only used the bucket sparingly. Use my grapple and forks more than anything. Rotary cutter, disc harrow and spreader are all Land Pride and have been really good with minimal maintenance.

There are some nice pre 2014 non emission units that come up if you keep watch on the sales sites.

Having a tractor with a bucket is like having a king cab pickup..Once you get one, you'll wonder how you ever got along without it.

Great advice above keep it in a barn. The newer one don’t hold up setting in the weather. Plastic and rubber on them will be toast.

I am 5 minutes away from our local Tri-Green dealer and he is a family friend. I can get in contact with him in a minute if I need him. There has been a green and yellow tractor on this property for over 70 years now whether row cropping or producing hay. There are currently three sitting in our barns now and no issues. All equipment is also JD. They have helped us supplement our incomes and provide a way of life for a long time and we aren't going to change brands.
On a side note-several comments about Mahindra being a good brand. My neighbor in Ford City had one with less than 200 hours on it and the water pump went out in it. Took over 4 months to get a new pump for it. Also the bolts that mount the stabilizer arms to the frame for the front end loader also broke off. He had to drill and back out the broken bolts. The strength of the metal in the Mahindra is in question. Be advised.
Hydro for short work and tight places, shuttle shift for the long rows, and for bush-hogging open fields.

J. Deere 5075E.....2013 model....1500 hrs. with only a couple blown fuses to replace. I think Kubota's are "okay" but they aren't as user friendly.

M series Kubota. Personally I prefer at least 70hp if using the fel much. I have a 70hp and 35 hp kubotas. Only problem was rats decided to chew the fuel line. Easy fix though.
Two roads diverged in the woods and I took the one with deep ruts, hills and mud.It may be bumpy but WHAT A RIDE!

Most people who say a HST robs horsepower have never owned one, just read about them. I have a L48 2002 model with HST and it will get down even in medium. The ONLY complaint about HST I have is it won’t go as fast down the road as my geared tractors. It’s only a 48Hp but it is heavy and will push and pull great. Do not let that rumor stop you from getting HST.

You can't keep most tractors 50hp and under running because they are made and marketed towards weekend warriors and homeowners sitting on 10 acres or less. They are simply not made to last. This is 2023. Welcome. People don't farm with something like that and haven't for decades. They aren't tough. They are lightweight and weak. Most are junk. And when I say "junk" I mean by 3,000 hours they are done if they make it that far.
It's like a Poulan chainsaw says right there in the manual it's only good for 40 hours. Same kind of engineering. Most homeowners don't put that many hours on a machine so why build one that will go 10,000 when you only need it to get through the warranty period if there even is a warranty period.
25 years ago these companies didn't think like this. Acccept the fact that these new machines are junk. That's written in stone at this point whether someone wants to accept this or not.
1) I don't know what you can get done with a 50hp tractor but it's not much and it ain't fast. Hell with what anyone says.... I've got one. I know first hand how much work it will do. It ain't much.
2) Question - what are you pulling with your 1972 tractor? And what model is it.
3) Question - how many acres are you bush hogging?
Apologize if these have been answered but It's really hard to recommend a tractor not knowing this. Otherwise we're throwing out opinionated BS IMO.
I would worry less about what color paint is on it and more about the dealer. I have 6 tractors right now 4 of which are Deere one of which is a newer model built in the last 10 years MFWD with Loader. Anything Deere has built after the mid-2000's is a complete POS. I wouldn't even look at one.
FYI - If buying new... I'm probably voting Kubota.. There are a lot of good dealers in that area. I use Capital Tractor in Brundidge and they are good. I have also bought and sold several machines with Coblentz and they are now a Kubota dealer.
This is not an endorsement of the Smurf machines but I've still got 1 90's New Holland tractor and that SOB is the toughest machine ever made and maybe also the easiest to work on. It's not the best tractor. But I respect it enough to at least admit it. There is nothing on it to break it will run with zero electronics. It will run with zero wiring doesn't even need a battery you can pull start it. It's crazy. This is the type machine you need if it will do a lot of sitting around and not be used often. Mine sits because I don't like the controls and I haven't worked on it in 10 years probably. Will easily crank after months of not being used.
There are still quite a few people around who work on older Tractors of any color..... so I wouldn't be scared as long as I had the appropriate truck/trailer to haul it.
Before we can give you anything more than a Ford/Chevy argument... We need to know what you are pulling or want to pull on the Bush Hog 5 or 6ft and the width disk for your plots or how many bottoms if you are plowing.... and also how many acres.
No government employees were harmed in the making of this mess.

Got a Mahindra 45-50 last month. Standard gears and built like an old tractor. Cast Iron and steel. I like a shuttle shift but this works well enough. Plenty stout. 7 year warranty and 0% financing.
