A friend of mine started out doing that and worked his way up to being a Computer Operator which runs a horizontal boring rig-----which was Earning him $200K plus when he retired after 40 years of doing such.....about 3 years ago. He said when they were offshore.....for fun....they would take a sledge hammer and bust the end off of a bottle of Compressed air and watch it shoot off like a rocket and skip across the water!!

My dad spent 20-years in the Gulf of Mexico on offshore rigs. Great pay, real good food and dangerous too.

That’s why most roughnecks have fingers missing. That’s not a job for someone soft. All my family was in the oilfield and rough as heck. I skipped school a couple days my senior year and went help trip pipe one time on a drilling rig. I can promise you I never skipped school again and I realized that wasn’t for me. I found out why my dad and all my uncles were the way they were.
It's hard to kiss the lips at night that chews your a$$ all day long.

Spent a many hour on those decks and in other sketchy places while working upstream. When the opportunity came to move into operations and get out of the field I jumped on. Don’t miss that crap a bit.

I used to work on the rigs as a welder. I had it a lot easier than those guys. They definitely earn their money. Definitely don’t miss it none

H2S gas, Caustic acid, potential blow-outs………on a week and off a week, but it took 13 hours one way trip. I started dreading going back after 3 days home.1982 Dual Drilling Company, rig 27. Hard work, but we sure ate well.

My dad worked 14 on and 14 off, less travel time each way. No holidays off it it was his weeks to work.
