I am under contract with a publisher and am currently working on a fly fishing guide to Alabama book. I want to make this as complete as possible and admit while I have a lot of fly fishing experience, I don't know everything. If you know of a subject-matter expert or a guy that is particularly good at fly fishing for a certain species, please help me get in touch with them!

I already am familiar with most guides, I am looking at folks that are particularly experienced with a certain species on the fly.

Thanks!

You need to get in touch with a gentleman named Tom Hand in Athens. He used to be neighbors with my parents and had been tying flies for years. May have a lot to offer

You should give the Riverside Fly Shop on the Sipsey Fork a call.

Thanks. I should have mentioned I know all shops/guides in the state. I am searching out the guy that does his thing, and does it well, without anyone knowing.

I can tie an extremely mediocre Morrish hopper and wear out some bluegill on Aldridge Creek....

Hope you find what you're looking for, sounds like a cool project.

Problem is; he probably wants to keep it that way?

Maybe. I'm talking more techniques and on the water knowledge than spots though. Obviously a person would have to be willing. If no one comes forward, that's fine too. Just thought I'd ask.

I use a fly rod for my Tournament Pro Rig. That's a triple drop shot that I let drag while bass fishing. The fly rod has a baitcaster instead of a fly reel to hold the line. I caught several on it yesterday.

But this is a real purist method and you probably don't want it in your book.

smile

Good luck with the book!

Haha. Some of your observations and experience while fishing may mean more than whether you used a fly or not to catch them!

I know this ain't what you were asking for, but I thought you might find it interesting. Found this in my Dad's stuff. They advertise various flies, rods, reels and clothing. I googled the name and it seems they are still in business. I have Dad's old fly rod, but I've never used one before.

Trout-Bum,
With the crappie population around here; how about a chapter in the book on fly fishing for that species? Have you targeted crappie?
Have a good crappie population on the lake I live on and was hoping to try for them on fly this year.

If you’re doing a saltwater chapter, Cliff Jones is the only true fly guide in my area.

Do popping bugs count as flies? I always just use different sizes of Adams and hares ear nymphs, about all I have ever needed.

I know him well, but he's relatively new to fly fishing himself. I'm looking for OGs or subject matter experts.

Cliff Jones is a boss. Definitely get with JohnG and get with him, or find Jones online.
