Getting older means adapting to the constant presence of loss. You lose your career, your identity, your status, your health, your friends, and then worst of all you lose your loved ones. Every day is a blessing but as it passes you just shift one more notch down the line. For every glorious sunrise there always comes a sunset. All you can do is remember the good times, forget the bad ones, take care of the necessary, and start another day tomorrow. Sorry for your loss. Very nice post. Thanks Roadkill.

ETA: Love hearing the history part about Cahaba Heights. Been here 20+ years now. Sounds like the Florida Short Route was fun back in the day.

I am glad he is now at peace. I am also grateful that you got to spend time with him over these last few years. Both my parents died in 2007 (83 days apart) both from cancer. They were both sick at the same time and I was staying with my father after radiation and my brother stayed with my mother in the hospital.
I remember telling my father that it wasnt fair that we would lose both of them so close together. His reply was simple. He said that there are 3 ways a person dies. First is suddenly, this is the easiest on the deceased but hard on the family because they dont have time to say things they wish they had. Second is slowly. My grandmother died this way, her mind was always sharp but he body failed... slowly... over 14 years in a nursing home. He suffered without complaint but it was hard on us watching her slowly drift away. Then my father said the third way is the way your mother and I will die. After a couple months we will be gone. This keeps us from suffering long term, and everyone can say or talk about things they want. I didnt realize how truthful he was until after they were gone.
Again Irish I am sorry for your loss but he is in paradise with your beautiful mother.

Sounds like a heck of a dad, Great read, Thank you for sharing. I am glad you know hes with the lord.
