If you kill a deer with small antlers there’s no shame in it. No one has to justify it by saying it’s mature or big bodied. As long as you eat.

Last rack deer I killed was a 3 year old . I just had to know what that 357mag rifle would do on a bigger deer. Lol

The place I hunt has a good many 7-8 year old bucks. Most of them die from
old age. Here’s one from this year. He never had more than 125” of antler
and he’s headed downhill. He will probably make it one
more year and will have 2 inch tines next year.

They don’t all grow big racks when they get older.
A few do.

That one looks mature. Op buck doesn’t look that old yet, I’d shoot him if I wanted some meat though.

Ive got several that look just like the OP’s deer. Every time i see one I come up with 50 excuses not to shoot it.

I'll say this too Frankie.......that pic is the only time I ever saw him during daylight out in the open. The following year I saw him in my backyard at night during the rut. His rack didnt change a whole lot....It was just like two main beams with no tines

Shooting deer based on antler size will ruin genetics in the long run. Think about it... studs are killed at 2 or 3, while the retards live to be 7 or 8. Which group is contributing more to the gene pool? This has been demostrated on hunting reserves in Africa. I've read studies on this in the past, but all I could find after a quick google search was this publication hidden behind a paywall. You can still read the abstract though.

I can drive 30 min and show you the effects of high grading on WMAs. It’s way more prevalent than you think.
