I've got some questions I need some answers on to help guide me in buying a youth compound bow for my 11 year old. He is 5'2" with a long lanky body and arms...unlike me

What poundage is the minimum required or suggested for a hunting bow?

What speed range should I be looking for?

In my head I'd like to get something that he can grow with so something with a wide adjustable range for draw length and poundage would be good...right?

What other features are important for a youth bow, besides weight and length?

What are some models that you guys would suggest he shoot?

I'm a novice at bows to be perfectly honest. I shoot an old PSE Nova and only bow hunt a couple times a season. I can tell you that money is an object. He is paying for half with his own money he earns and I'm paying the other half. Max $400 for the outfit is what I have as the top end limit, $300 would be better. Used bow is perfectly fine.

Also, I see the Redhead branded bows from BPS...who actually makes these for them?

Get him a Diamond Razor Edge that goes from 30# to 60# and he'll be set for a long time with infinite adjustments to keep the bow setup right for him at all times. 35# is the minimum legal weight for Alabama hunting and he should have no problem comfortably pulling that much weight even right now.

you can also look at the Bear Appentince. At dicks fully rigged for $279.00 it gies from 20 to 50 lbs and draw length from 18 to 25 i think.

I am not a bow hunter, but let me tell you a story just for you to think about when purchasing arrows. I had a young man about a few months ago that was 10-12 y/o he was shooting (carbon arrows). Well he didn't understand or either notice that one of his arrows was damaged. So when he shot his bow at home the carbon arrow broke apart. The larger piece went through his hand along with multiple small particles of the carbon arrow. Just something to let you know to teach the young hunter about or either buy aluminum arrows until old enough to understand. Glad your getting them started early.

I bought my son a Parker Buckshot from BassPro ( I think) a couple of years ago. It was completely set up with sights, rest, peep, and quiver. Just had to buy some arrows and a release. I think it was $279. Bow goes from 30-50# I think, and draw length from 18-28" I believe.

My wife shoots the diamond razor edge. Good, solid bow for the price and a good shooter. Won't break the bank for the pachage either. A little over $300 bucks we paid.
