I know it’s early but something I’ve been thinking about for the upcoming spring. I have a Zoysia lawn that I sided 3 years ago. The lawn is super thick. Aside from a power rake or dethatcher which do you prefer to do in the Spring?

I normally cut my during the winter while it’s dormant and cut it kinda low. By may it will choke a mower down and needs to be cut weekly if we are getting rain

My Myers zoysia in the back yard doesn’t get too thick. The emerald zoysia I put down in the front is another matter. I’m gonna burn it and see what happens. It’s too thick and almost ready to kill it and replace with myers.

I have zorro zoysia and it is THICK after 4 years. Like carpet thick. I know you said without, but just FYI I bought a cheap electric dethatcher a couple of years ago on Prime days. I scalp mine first couple of cuttings and then dethatch. It makes a huge difference. I’ve never actually heard of burning it. Seems like that would cause a weed problem. But if you try it and it works let us know.

Start cutting it as low as you can and remove all of the dormant grass. May take a few cuts but take it down to the lowest mower setting and bag/remove the clippings. After green up, vericut and core aerate. Don't bother with dethatching.

Pretty sure your not supposed to burn zoysia. It doesn’t go dormant like Bermuda in Alabama winters. It is a cooler season grass and actually stays green towards the bottom, though it looks dormant on the surface. Burning it will damage it from what I read years ago.

I have one spot of Zoysia under two trees in my front yard. The rest of my yard is Bermuda. I burn the Bermuda every spring. The Zoysia never goes dormant enough to burn. If you spray the Zoysia with Roundup, you're gonna have a brown yard until you re-sod it or let it fill back in. Trust me on that.
