Who has ever fished it this time of year for bass? Is the dam where one would need to be to catch smallmouth this time of year?
I had much rather be tried by twelve than carried to my grave by six!!!!

I’ve only fished it with live bait. We did catch some smallmouth below wheeler dam, but it’s probably been 6 weeks ago.

The dam isn’t the only place you’ll catch them. But May be the more likely spot with live bait.

I have spent a total of 2 days fishing Wilson, so take this with a grain of salt. I went up 3 years ago for the purpose of catching a smallmouth, something I had never done before. I fished the tailrace below Wheeler the first day and didn't catch much of anything. Tried it a couple hours the next morning and got skunked again. I didn't know what I was doing, but nobody was catching any. It was mid November and they were supposed to be there according to those who fished it a lot, but they just weren't there.
So I went up Bluewater creek and just started bass fishing and caught a couple of smallmouth and several largemouth. Most of them were on the outside of the horseshoe about a mile up the creek. Good luck!

Early December is when we used to catch them. Last time my brother and I went I was trying to net some bait about daybreak when I slid off the rocks and into the river. And old black gentleman was fishing off bank said “dem rocks is slick “. Thanks for the warning.

I enjoy listening to....Fresh Water Fishing Report on Spotify
They do a lot of jibbering about guiding and what they expect and how things are going. They act like the smallmouth bite is over below the dams but to me, it never stops.

2 weeks ago on Wilson, caught 12 largemouth on white square bill crankbait. Right off brush pile along the bank. Very windy, water moving pretty good. At Doublehead on a trip with wife so didn’t fish a whole lot but did suck up some grass into my newly rebuilt Mercury Optimax. Be very careful of the moss on top of the water and the grass right below the water line.
