If you wanna get technical, muscadine is the name of the wild grapes that are native to the southeastern USA. Scuppernong is the name of a specific variety of muscadine that was native to North Carolina. These are the ones that are green in color when mature, while the others are bronze.
They have been crossed and all sorts of varieties have been developed over the years. My dad had a 2 acre vineyard and probably was growing a dozen different varieties that would mature at different times, keeping him busy for about 6 weeks in the fall. He sold them to various grocery stores and had a route that went over several counties. When he died, I ran it for a season and it was a whole lot of work. However, it grossed about $15k a year, which is pretty good for 2 acres. Anyone who wants to farm could establish a muscadine vineyard and do very well, but not many wanna work that hard these days.
