might try going up a tree in your yard 5-10 ft. shoot your bow and get used to it awhile then work up some more. just takes building confidence in your equipment.

If you've never climbed much with them or any "quality" climber made by a TMA (I think that's the association quality hunting stands belong to) member and practice at home at low heights. Also, you'll need to work on setting the length of the cable to the correct length based on the diameter of the tree where you'll be hunting. The stand may be pointing up a little or maybe even a lot, but you'll need to practice judging where to set your cable at the ground floor.
I hear alot of good things about summit. I am going to check them out
ALWAYS wear a safety belt and keep your phone with you.

I think the climber you use has a ton to do with how safe and comfortable you feel. If yours isn't a sit down/stand up climber I suggest you get one. I'm a big(fat) dude that probably shouldn't be climbing  and until I bought my first Summit Goliath I never felt totally safe. Now I can shimmy up there as good as a big guy can and sit there safely and comfortably. Scape you up some cash and get you a Summit Goliath and I'll bet you'll feel much different about it.

i think it has a lot to do with the type stand you have and the type tree you are planning to climb. I have an API Grand Slam Magnum since i weigh about 250 lbs and when i climb a soft wood like a pine, my stands really grips great and the blades dig in snuggly to the tree. But when climbing a harder bark tree in the oak family, the stand will tend to slip a little if you do not get it snug enough around the tree when starting up giving you an uneasy feeling. I have been able to overcome this by making sure the tree has a certain diameter and my blades on the stand are sharp and pointed.
As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

I looked at a Summit SS yesterday but the store was packed so customer service wasn't exactly in the ? I am going to wait uuntil I can make it to a BP I also want to check the API and some others.

I would really suggest the razor ss, I like having the bar in front to climb with or for gun hunting, but when you get comfortable, you can swing the bar behind you for an open front

I think I have used a treestand once since my oldest boy was born. I now have three kids and no treestands. I have sold or given them all away. I know an accident can happen at any time while doing dang near anything but I just can't get comfortable in a treestand ever since I became responsible for three kids. The funny thing is I climb a whole lot higher at work than I ever would have in a tree. Its just a mental thing I guess.

I know what you mean. If I didn't have to hunt public land most of the time I wouldnt use one at all. I have two kids myself and can't afford to join a club or lease land here in North Carolina that has shooting houses or ladder stands that I can put up. The land I hunt in Cullman already has them put up. So I don't need one for that.

Try setting your safety strap so it's tight when you sit down. I like it loose so I can hang out and over but having that little reminder tugging at your back may help you out.

I'm not a fan of heights at all! However, I use a Summit Goliath climber with HSS Treewalker safety vest. I'm strapped to the tree the whole time I'm climbing up and down the tree. I feel VERY safe in this setup.
Whatever you decide to climb in, just make sure you wearing a good harness and stay attached to the tree the whole way up and down. With ladder stands and lock on stands use a life line. Being safe means feeling safe. Good luck!
