Toughest man I ever knew said even the bed sheet hurt.
I'm not very tough but I'll go ahead and confirm that even the bed sheet does indeed hurt. Socks are unbearable. Before it got to it's worst, I went to work with a workboot on one foot and a loafer with the toe cut completely out. No toes in that sock either. When I bumped my toe on a table leg I thought it would have been less painful to remove it with a dull hacksaw. Alopurinol 300 mg daily keeps it in check now.
