Vpd told me this am that they don't know alot about the motivation, it's more a case of crazy.

They are heavily patrolling churches right now.

Don't know if it's accurate or not, but rumor I'm hearing is this is someone the local PD knew and had previous encounters with...and supposedly had visited this church previously and showed "strange" behavior...curious if that's true

Same thing I am hearing: local nut job, known to law enforcement.

I run passed this church every Thursday. I topped the hill to see an Iwo Jima styled massing of law enforcement. The Shelby Country Sheriff's deputy directing traffic was a friend from high school. He waved me through and let me finish my run. He didn't want to go into details, but told me to watch the news.

As it so happens, a good friend of mine's dad was at the church for the pot luck dinner. He's the one that rushed the shooter and is said to have beat him senseless with the gun after he took it from him. My buddy and his dad were pretty shook up and I haven't asked for more details. All he said is that it was an older man that stood up, said something (not sure what), and started shooting.

There's a vigil today at 10AM. Terrible, terrible for our small community.

I told my wife last night that I will now be carrying at all times. I've avoided doing so for a very long time. The area I live in is extraordinarily safe: doors are rarely locked, the police are rarely involved in anything other than getting a cat out of a tree, and crime is generally nonexistent. Frankly, carrying a gun around here has never made much sense. If something like this can happen here, it can happen anywhere.

I've seen enough just working downtown to know being armed is not only my 2A right and my responsibility to myself and to my family to keep all of us safe. I carry 24/7 for this exact reason. This happened right here close by. You never know.

I want to believe we've got a hero amongst us. Hopefully this story will be told and that person who stepped in will receive the recognition they deserve.

Presser didn't have much to it. Seems he was known to law enforcement and had attend the church previously (I'm not familiar with him). White male, 71. Three older people are dead. They will ID the shooter once the warrants are signed.

No real info on the shooter other than they he has attended the church before. They said an 84 year old white male dead on the scene, 75 year old white female died at hospital, 84 year old white female is being treated at the hospital.

What I do not understand is why in the hell someone got the gun from him and beat him with it instead of putting every remaining round in the POS.

May have been where it went down and that pesky little commandment "Thou shalt not kill".

A man calling himself “Mr. Smith” was sitting alone and longtime church member Bart Rainey approached him and invited him to sit at a table, said the Rev. Doug Carpenter, who founded the church in 1973 and retired in 2005.

“Mr. Smith” refused to join them and later pulled out a handgun and shot Rainey, who was 84s, Carpenter said.

Quote
He also shot Sarah Yeager and an 84-year-old Hoover woman. Yeager was killed; the Hoover woman is being treated at UAB Hospital.

Jim Musgrove, a church member, hit the shooter with a chair and wrestled the gun away from him, Carpenter said.

No one at the dinner knew “Mr. Smith,” who claimed he was a former member. “We’re trying to figure out who he is,” Carpenter said.

My buddy's dad. I know we talk about it a lot. "Oh, I'd do this," or, "I'd do that," when we talk about these situations, but Mr. Musgrove did it. An unarmed man put himself between a shooter and his fellow church members and neutralized the threat armed only with determination and a chair. Amazing. God bless him for being there and having the courage.

Murder. Not kill. Defense of the innocent is not murder. It’s justified. God never told Moses not to kill. Another debate for another thread I suppose, but I’ve played this scenario over in my head a million times because you never know where it’ll happen. Gotta be prepared to take a life if you’re going to stop it. I’d love to hear the story from the guy who pistol whipped him.
