I really appreciate all the recommendations!!
We plan to go in late September. What type weather should I generally plan for?

We will be out there in September as well. Plan for anything from perfect autumn temps to snow. It will likely be pleasant temps in Denver and could be snow at higher elevations. The elk will be rutting and the Estes Park/RMNP area is a great place to see and hear them. My wife likes the city stuff while I want to go West into the mountains. We will do both. We will be staying with family right beside Cherry Creek State Park in Centennial. There are some hammer whitetails in that park and we see them all the time. Also, the lake there is the walleye source for stocking all Colorado state lakes. It is jam packed full of eating size walleyes and you cannot help but catch a bunch of them. Use your time wisely as 5 days won't even scratch the surface of cool things to see and do. In the mountains, you will get the humbling spiritual feeling that inspired John Denver to write Rocky Mountain High. You have to be there to feel it, and you will.

I thought the drive up to Black Hawk from Denver was interesting, its not far out of town and some really nice mountain scenery. My wife is from Colorado, so she loves driving those switchbacks much faster than me, scared the hell out of me. Black Hawk/Central City looks like if Disney designed a casino town. Someone else mentioned Buckhorn Exchange in Denver, they had a pretty diverse menu of game to try, and the upstairs bar area was a cool place to hang out and have cocktail before dinner with lots of interesting things to look at.

Late sept can range from sunny and mild to cold and snowy within 24 hrs lol. Gotta love those rocky mtns

Go light on the alcohol and drink plenty of fluids. Elevation effects everybody a little different but it’s a big change going from 500’ to 8-10k’ in the mountains. For me hiking at 12k was rough and I’m in pretty good shape. Denver sits a 5k and it’ll take me a day or so to lose a dull headache due to the change.
