My dad's mother tried to trace her ancestry and found, on her father's side, it ended in the Civil War. Her grandfather was wounded at Chattanooga as Sherman came through. She was told by her aunt he was in a field hospital and was about to have a leg amputated when the hospital was abandoned and he was left for dead. She said she wondered why he had a wooden leg and never paid taxes. Per the government, he was dead.

That was interesting. There were 3 with my last name that came over in 1635 but that doesn't mean that I am a direct descendant of any of those 3. For all I know my line may not have migrated to the new world until the 1700s or even the early 1800s. My uncle has tracked our lineage back to 1820 something here in the US.

Here's something that many of you may not have considered. There wasn't a very high percentage of people back then that were literate or even partially, and sometimes the spelling of names relied on the ships scribe, a court clerk, clergyman or a census takers interpretation and/or guess of how a name should be spelled. For instance my last name is one of these.

And I think there are a few more versions that come from an area of Wales. The names don't necessarily, but the people do. And a lot of people had no idea about how to spell their own name and the dialect in which they spoke often determined how someone wrote it.

My wife's maiden name was Leath but less than 40 miles from where she grew up she has relatives that spell their name Leeth. The name was derived from Leather or Leatherman somewhere down the road.

My great, great great, great, great grandfather, john barber, is buried in a Presbyterian cemetery in NJ. He is recognized as a revolutionary war patriot by the daughters of the America revolution.

He is buried next to George Maxwell, who was George Washington's NJ General.

We went to NJ to see the grave and they rolled out the red carpet for us. They were excited to know more about one of the oldest gravestones in their cemetery.

I found this while looking through my ancestry. I guess I come from a long line of turkey hunters. This was my 5th or 6th great grandfather.

Heck I just found out 2 years ago my birth name was Mark Anthony Roberts. I don’t care for anymore ancestral surprises unless it’s to discover my birth dad was Elon Musk and I gotta couple billion headed my way.

We might be related. My folks adopted me when I was 6mos old and changed my name.

My Mother was from Clay County Missouri. Last week, I went to the cemetery where my Grandparents are buried and scattered some of her ashes at her request. My Grandfather was a big historian and actually donated a lot of pictures of the Younger/James brothers that are published. There is a monument that he had placed in Blue Springs of my xxxAunts that were killed when the Union Stockade collapsed in Kansas City. One of my Grandfather's being 14 years of age and their Brother rode to Lawrence Kansas and burned the place down with Quantrill. He later rode with Jo Shelby in the war and actually went all the way to Mexico trying to reform the Confederacy. My Uncle and Aunt are into it in a big way and tracing ancestors all the way back to Scotland. My trip was interesting but after looking at so many pictures, it was a bit monotonous. Tracing ancestors a lot of times is speculative which to me could go the wrong way. Was cool that hey are convinced that William Wallace was ancestor which history shows is not like the movie Braveheart actually depicts.

my dads cousin had a book printed 50+ years ago of our family history all the way back to 1200's er so. She gave every member of the extended family a copy of the book. It sits on my desk as I type this. Very interesting to read. It goes into folks they married and all. Book is over an inch thick.

Mom's side can be tracked way back to the Scottish old country several centuries. My grandad on my father side was a orphan and we don't know much past him.

On the contrary, record keeping was far better than it is now. Even in the backwoods of places in the South.

13th great grandfather came over on the Mayflower. Other notable ancestors include the inventor of the toilet he was a member of Queen Elizabeth the 1st court, the colonel of the North Carolina Militia in the revolutionaryWar, also a 6th great grandfather I believe killed the last known wild American in kentucky. Most interesting my 3rd great grandfather and my wife's 3rd great grandfather both fought and were captured at Fort Blakely in Spanish Fort. I think it was some 3000 soldiers or so surrendered.
