My mom was going through a bunch of my late grandmother's stuff this morning and found a bunch of documentation where she, at one point, did some ancestry research. She did this several years ago but at the time, was able to trace my mom's family back to Farnham, England in the late 1400's. EDIT....Cheshire, England in the mid-1200's My favorite, though, was one of my great (several times over) grandfathers, Edward Grantham.......apparently he was arrested in Virginia in 1694 for "entertaining Indians contrary to law and not attending church". Ol' Eddie sounds like he was a heathen

And just what were they up to ? Ha..that's what I was wondering. I found a more detailed write-up on him that said, generally speaking, they were not allowed to conduct business with natives without getting some sort of permission/approval from from the government first. He apparently decided to do it anyway and got fined for that, along with frequently skipping church. It is thought he probably just paid a fine and went on about his business.

I bet some of our ancestors bumped into each other. My family worked their way from New York down through Virginia and ran the first ferry across the French Broad River.

Some of those old stories are really entertaining. I came across an article that was printed in the NY Times in 1884 about my great great grandparents eloping in Middle Georgia. Apparently these articles were printed up north to show them how crazy the southerners were. Hopefully I took after my grandmother…
The last sentence: “The woman was looked upon as being an industrious and respectable lady, while Warren was regarded as a worthless character, and the news of his departure was received with a marked degree of satisfaction by the entire community”.

A funny story about Ancestry the DNA service
My Brother and myself were doing a family tree without each other knowing
Always knew we were Irish on my fathers side
I traced everything back to the late 1600’s in this country and wanted to know more so I did the Ancestry thing
Well they got everything right the first time but it’s changed 5 times since then and nothing is right to the point I think I’m adopted now (not really) and my parents aren’t really my parents
Funny thing about those services is not just that but they won’t reveal any Native American blood line for you
My great grandmother was named Alabama and her sisters name was Missouri
When I need expert advice I tend to talk to myself
The older I get the better I used to be

Probably has something to do with financial liability from the government or getting involved with any of the native American tribes today. Ancestry doesn't want to touch that.

My wife’s grandmother was big into tracing ancestry. She got my family way back but found out one of my ancestors was one of the Jude’s in the Salem witch trials.
Would walk over a naked woman to get to a gobblin turkey!

My mom's side been here a long time. We are working on establishing lineage to the initial settlers at Plymouth Rock. We have a bassinet in th Smithsonian that we believe an offspring was born just before leaving Europe.
The craziest things to me are the census, which listed all of their possessions. Barrels of whiskey, livestock, furniture, etc.

My deceased grandmother (my dad's mother) first name was Georgia and she had a sister named Florida. True story.

Can't point to a person or time, but I'm fortunate now to know I have a strong Norwegian ancestry. I watched the Vikings series and would joke with my kids that we were all vikings but that my wife was on English. She called my bluff on Christmas with an Ancestry test. Turns out I wasn't too wrong. I'm adopted and had no idea of where I came from. Guess my anger and enjoyment of alcohol come honest.

Here is a list of passengers for ships in the 1600s. You can see when you family fist arrived and what ship they were on. Most of the passengers were bond servants for 3-7 years. Passengers

My grandmother had a lot of fun editing family genealogical records in order to make it seem like we were from some sort of aristocratic class of people. Yet, I was able to see the obvious fact that we are from lower Alabama and there aint no real aristocrats anywhere around here.

I've never done any ancestry lookups, but I've never understood how they could be very accurate. Going way back I doubt most people had any type of birth certificate, especially poor country folks. I'm sure record keeping wasn't a thing in these backwoods settlements either and I bet they avoided government like we try to do today Just seems there would be too many missing links to establish any real lineage over a couple hundred years.
