We are in a fire ban here and I cannot use lump or charcoal to cook. Since it is Memorial weekend and my wife has grown accustomed to my cooking, she gave me the green light to buy a gas grill.

I wanted (after doing some research) a Weber Spirit 310 and they run around $840, but I checked an aisle or two over and found one of these at Lowes...pit boss pro black triple-function combo grill.

Jury is still out but I thought I'd ask if any of you use one of those or a Pit Boss in general. I've wanted a pellet smoker for a long time, so I made the best of the situation.

Cooked up some Conecuh tonight last minute and of course it was good, but I'm ready to do some long cooks.

Wait, a burn ban means no fires contained in a grill? That seems awfully commie. What’s the punishment if they catch you grilling a steak over the coals?

No idea. I'm in Colorado and while I won't talk shucks about the state government, you can search quickly and see what's up. I live in a high desert and we've been really dry all winter. Had some bad wildfires, so I understand somewhat. I got a pretty green lawn, so I don't think I could catch it on fire if I tried.

I recently got the 1230 SC model. I’m still on my first bag of traeger hickory pellets. The pellet gas combo works good and the smoke flows over to the gas chamber some for a little smoke taste. This is my first time at pellets used for smoking, and it doesn’t seem to be as strong as wood chips. But it easy to use.

I have had a Weber Genesis for 20+ years that is similar to the legend Parts are easy to get when they finally wear out. Get one of those boxes for wood chips that you place on the flavor bars and it is very close to charcoal.

Until you do, you can make a pouch with foil (ex: 4”x4”), fill it with wood chips, seal it up and poke 5 or 6 holes in one side with a toothpick. Set it above a flame bar with the holes facing up and it will provide smoke on a gas grill. The toothpick holes let it get enough oxygen to smolder, but not ignite the chips.
