I spend a lot of time in and around public land, but haven't tried to hunt it much until this year. My private spots have been good enough to suffice. This year, that changed, so I had to branch out to kill a turkey. Went with a friend who is one of the best turkey killers I know. Climbing up and down those ridges ain't no joke, and the extra weight on the way out didn't help, but it was well worth it!

It was a tad windy, which seems to be the normal conditions of my hunts this year. We struck a bird up that gobbled his head off and came in on a string. He was dead by 7:45 am.

He was a heck of a public land bird, with three birds and sharp 1" spurs.

As we were climbing out from that area, we struck another bird on the ridge of another holler. We set up and that bird was dead within 10 minutes of his first gobble.

What a morning in the turkey woods. Lots of cool flowers popping out now too.

My daughter was excited and loves eating turkeys.

This was a day and hunt I'll never forget.
