Lighter topic.

Who knows their beer? Lagers, ales, IPAs, etcetera... I'm sort of lost.

I think most big brand beers are lagers? I like ice beers. Anybody else?

Check out the beer judge certification style guidelines (BJCP). It’s a cool resource that tells you what each style is like, and provides commercial examples so you can go find and try new beer styles.

Cheers!

I categorize all beers into 4 categories

Miller Lite
IPA
Bongwater IPA
Everything else

I normally only drink Miller Lite but if I’m feeling uppity I’ll drink an IPA

I drank a 10% IPA made by Sam Adams once, heavy malt, and it was like Liquid Plumber. I ran to the bathroom and was totally cleaned out in a couple of minutes.

A Belgian tripel or quad would be up around 10%. They’ll knock you down quick.

Blackhorse Brewery in Knoxville has a 10% that is good.

Tropicalia by Creature Comforts is 6.6% and is solid

Terrapin Wake-n-Bake is more than 9%

Here is a good list:

Cliff notes version, basically all beer is either an ale or a lager. Has to do with how (and at what temp) it’s fermented. So those are two very broad classifications. You need to break it down to what type to get to a real “style”

Most light American beers (miller, bud, coors, etc) are lagers, but more specifically they’re an American Pilsner. Known for being light, crisp and not very hoppy. There are also pilsners from other countries that are very similar but are typically slightly hoppier.

Guinness Draft (nitro) is proof God loves us and wants us to be happy.

I tend to prefer darker beers as a rule, but I like most any of ‘em. My all-time favorite beer is free beer.

When not drinking Scotch or Reposado, I'm a hophead....IPA, DIPA (double), IIPA (imperial) and some ales for me. Favorites if I'm drinking beer: Sweetwater IPA (looks like a lemonade can), Bell's Two Hearted Ale, Rogue Dead Guy Ale, Dogfish Head 90min off the top of my head. There are soooooo many craft beers that you can easily get a stinker, if you're just looking at the art work on the labels as a determiner of taste or just go grabbing.

Kentucky Bourbon Barrel stout is really damn good if you are only going to have one. I’ve only been able to find it in pint bottles but one pint will get you feeling alright. Two of ‘em will make you full (though you will feel real good). Smooth with good even flavor.

I like stouts, IPA’s, and lagers if I’m having a few casual drinks. There so many craft breweries in the Carolinas now choices and options are numerous. Hard to pick a favorite.

My neighbors all drink the lightest beer on the face of the planet, Michelob Ultra. If I happen over to their place I’ll probably end up drinking 3-4 and just having to take a leak. Busch Light or Natty are my go to’s if tailgating, creek floating, or at a NASCAR race (they don’t call them nascar beers for nothing).

The wife drinks sours. They aren’t my speed but maybe give them a shot if you feel adventurous.

I agree... I am not a big fan of beer but I always have Guinness and Miller High Life in my mini-fridge. No fancy "craft" beer can stand next to Guinness. If I go to some fancy craft house I usually get the small pours of high gravity. Then drink it like a cocktail.

I primarily enjoy spirits...
