You were not the only one with a bible. I can guarantee that.

IMO it really does not matter when the Bible was written. If You have faith in God and are a believer then the Bible is God’s word given to Man and is eternal and everlasting. Satan loves nothing more than to sow seeds of doubt in mankind and to doubt the word of God in the Bible. I am not the most faithful Christian but I thank God everyday that I had a strong raising to be brought up to have a strong faith in Him and be a believer.

Not what I meant. Nothing to do with the writing, it's the reading part

I know people going to all kinds of churches who i know for 100% sure love the Lord just like i do and are doing their absolute best to lead people to Christ. There is no way you can throw a blanket over 100 or 1000 people sitting in a building and say, "all these are good" or "all these are bad". Its an individual thing.

Bingo!! It’s amazing how many experts we have on Christianity on this board. They probably refer to almighty God as “the man upstairs” and read their Bible at Easter and Christmas but want to criticize others for trying to live right. Take that somewhere else. If a church is preaching that Jesus Christ is the only way to heaven then they’re light years ahead of the rest of the world. People always forget churches are made of people and people sin whether they’re christians or not. I think the important question to ask is what is it inside of you that makes you burn with hate against religion? Hypocrisy? Lying? Etc…. Every single person on this board is guilty of those things, the only difference is Christians admit it and ask forgiveness.

When I lived in Chelsea I went to the greystone campus COTH. I will say there’s very few people who come into church with a bible. Do I think Chris Hodges is a good man? I definitely do. But his sermons are feel good at times. My wife says he’s a better teacher than a preacher. I know they do alot for the community and are always helping those in need. I don’t attend there anymore but I do believe they are doing Gods work. Maybe not how it was done when alot of us were growing up but people are different now and they require different tactics to bring them to Jesus. The church I attend now is more old school with the preacher not being afraid to tell you how it is. I personally like a preacher who isn’t afraid to offend the congregation.

There's a lot of pastors who are much better at telling you what the Bible says than what it means.

Iam not going to jump in on this to hard, but handing out water after a storm and just because hodges is a good man does not get you into heaven, hell is full of "good" people. I have been in a pile of those churchs and just gives me a really weird feeling in my gut, i believe in the king james version of the bible and what it says and theres alot of difference in what coth does and what the bible says. I have friends that go to that place and it just seems like a fun place to go hear music and eat popcorn and have a coke from the lobby concession stand

They do far more than hand out water.

How about this? If you think its all hokey, go do what Pastor Chris asks you to do. Invest 1 year of your life. If you haven't been baptized, get baptized. Get in a small group. Do the growth track, and if you really want to feel froggy, do Freedom. If you aren't better off in a year, walk away.

Is it a big church? Yes. Can you see Chris? Doubtful. There is real spiritual genius in what they do. They aren't preaching sermons for mature christians, they are preaching sermons to lost people. Sermons that bring them to Christ. The deeper teaching is in a small group if that's your sort of thing.

What happens if a non-believer walks into a church and the pastor is doing a fire and brimstone message. You are going to HELL IF YOU DON'T REPENT RIGHT NOW!!!! If you walked up into a church as a non-believer and the pastor starts speaking in tongues???

You have lost your chance to teach that person about Jesus and save their soul.

You know what? I love a good sermon. You can preach one and really lay the wood to it, and I'll eat it up. You know what? Because I am not an unsaved person. It doesn't scare me because I know the truth and I know Jesus.

Just curious on the differences now? I'm all ears i have no dog in the fight...

I don’t know anything about COTH or Chris Hodges which is why I didn’t comment on him above. I do have friends that attend that know the gospel and the scriptures well as well as live it out daily so they must be doing something right over there

I see many people using their Bible App on their phone at church.

I also do this occasionally, so not seeing folks carrying a bible in church doesn’t mean they aren’t using it while at church in today’s world.

That's what I do. But also if they are putting it up on the screen, then you don't need one, and I've always found it easier to follow a sermon when you have the same bible the preacher is reading from.

Another thing. An unbeliever needs to feel like they aren't out of place. Walk into a church and everyone has a bible but you? They know where to flip to, but you don't?

Times change. When I used to work for Habitat our office was in Fairfield. There is a big giant baptist Church there and it's dead. You know why? They didn't want black people to come.

I went in to look at an older church that wanted to merge with one. They were dying too. Probably 50 nice subdivisions inside of 20 minutes from them. It was run by these old people, and they wanted it to grow, but didn't want to change what they were doing. No merge because they didn't want to make the changes needed to attract people.

You can't win someone to Christ if you aren't speaking their language. Churches have to change to keep up. I remember when the baptist Church I was going to put in a cc machine. Oh dear Lord. You know what they found? Your average 25+ person doesn't even know how to write a check. They use a debit card. Now it's an app or Venmo.

Why would an unbeliever go to church?

What are these changes you speak of to attract unbelievers? My general thinking is the church should not look like the world?

Disclaimer Dash I am not old or part of the dying church. Just trying to understand.

Why would an unbeliever go to church?

We welcome all types of folks in all phases of belief or non-belief. Many non-believers come and want to "see what it is all about".
That is how many Christians start.
