My grandmother is in one now. Keeping her alive is not in her best interest. Everyday I hope is her last.

In my opinion - they look for ways to financially bleed you out.

Just my opinion here on nursing homes. If both you and your wife work and depending on the level that a parent can function or mobility of your parent, there's no alternative. I still have a sense of guilt and promise that I would not want to live my life to graduate to a nursing facility. Especially if you have worked all your life to get ahead and have to pay private rates for care even though it is well earned. The level of care that was provided for my Mother was top notch, but it was very expensive. All you can do is run out of money and let the government take over or scheme ahead and have all assets out of their name. If you are a scheming, better do it well in advance.

i had to watch my mother pass away from an outside window..... Still pisses me off to this day.

Sorry Brother, I did too and the guilt of her thinking that no one was around was a terrible thing for us.

I'll add that the nursing home operator went above and beyond to hire quality folks to care for my grandmother.Everytime Medicare would change a rule the operator was quick to respond and make sure that Medicare would have to provide rule changes in writing and she wasn't afraid to use her lawyer. My Pops asked her why she was such a total bulldog towards the Government and she stated "I've made my money these SOB's will NOT drain you dry." They didn't either.

Its a hard topic to discuss, but thoughts are with all involved here.

Yeah, I felt he same way and then got smacked in the face when my wife got to the point she requires 24/7 care.
I couldn't provide that and sleep/work too.

It's a choice we made together, but I still didn't/don't like it.

I think assets have to be moved 5 years, may be 7 years prior to being in a nursing home. I won't own a damn thing past 70.

It is a predatory business and those folks are in it for the money.

Yeah and try to deal with someone who has Alzheimers when they turn violent. My Grandfather is dealing with this now amd Grandmother is wearing him down quick....

We were kept out for long periods of time due to covid. But honestly who cares if they do get covid. Yes, it will kill/has killed some of the most vulnerable. But there are worse things than dying. Like sitting alone in a nursing home thinking no one cares about you.

Then the place still gets eat up with the covid anyway. So what was accomplished..... Nothing. Nothing but letting the elderly die alone. Complete BS.

My mother took care of her mom for three years. Fed through tube, changed diapers. She did not have a job though. I had alot of respect for her for doing that and said thats what i would do. With my current situation, it would probably prove to be impossible

For anyone that has watched Dexter. The key lime pie episode hit hard with me. A lady dying in the hospital had one last request saying that she had been searching for the perfect Key lime pie but had yet to find it. After several tries Dexter finally brought her the perfect pie. It was laced with poison meant to kill her and end her suffering. When my time comes, I hope that someone can bring me the perfect key lime pie.

My Grandmother took care of her Mother and MNL, but she couldn't take care of her Father because he developed Alzheimers and became violent. Now sadly it's rapidly happening (she's becoming increasingly more violent) to her. But like you i would try my best (my Wife would definitely help) to help.
