How is hunter harvest such a big factor if no one shoots hens??.....Are there a bunch of hens going unbred?

The old mean and terrible 10 percent of hardcore hunters are to blame according to that. That should work - attack the hunters who actually give a crap about turkey. Great plan. Quote a retired NWTF biologist saying YOU must kill less and hunt less. I’m sure the animosity in that rhetoric will work out great.

Prob less trapping than ever the last decade or so since pelts went to nothing and coyotes also increasing - that has to be a factor This right here. I don’t care what anyone says, biologist or not, if you want turkeys kill as many predators as you can and do it right before/around nesting season. We hardly had a turkey population on our land 15 years ago but after a good 8-10 years of hammering coons, possums, and coyotes we’ve got plenty of turkeys.

I may have to agree with him on the Hunter harvest,there are way more turkey hunters now than it was 15-20 years ago,back then I could always find land to turkey hunt but not anymore,the hens may be getting bred and then the few gobblers in the area may be killed and if several nest don’t make it then those hens may not get bred again that season,I’ll also agree with the predator problem

Honestly it’s the people who are deer hunting them now that are causing major issues that I’ve seen. When people go sit in a blind or in a shooting house on a field or corn pile and kill turkeys they are more the issue then turkey hunters. Club my buddy was in last year had a guy kill his limit if not more in a shooting house over corn piles. There’s way more of it happening nowadays then there was 10 years ago.

I never knew anyone who trapped in the 90s or early 2000s but know dozens now. Yall better kill the chicken snakes too they are listed as major nest predators in several studies.

A dead turkey is a dead turkey as far as management goes. It’s been said on here many times, that killing gobblers in the Spring doesn’t effect the turkey population. Has that thinking now changed?

I deer hunt birds that don’t gobble all the time. Never over corn though. But a dead bird is a dead bird, regardless of whether it gobbled to the gun or not. The issue imo isnt whether a hen is bred or not, at the end of the day it’s poult survival.

Why do it if u sit over corn - that’s like night hunting for deer - a 6 year old can consistently kill one that way When they are eating all the corn I put out for deer gotta do something. I prefer to wait until they get lined up and I can get 2-3 with one shot. Then maybe another one as they are running away.

Plenty of male turkey around to service hens to seasons end and beyond - the places I’ve hunted, as long as I can remember. Never a problem.
I see gobbler tracks on forest roads all the time in May. And I drive a lot of miles of timber company roads in multiple counties. They are around if hens need them.

Gotta think back to when fur prices were high so were turkey populations. Trapping dying out and the increase in hog and predator populations has driven turkeys to be much more susceptible to nests being destroyed. Shooting gobblers isnt a problem. I think there is something to be said about habitat changing but you have to think ten to twenty years ago what are the major factors around turkeys that have changed.

when I went to work in 1980 there were tons of trappers of all kinds. When fur prices fell in mid 80 the number of trappers fellow to the bottom. Never has returned to 1980 levels.
I've spent most of the money I've made in my lifetime on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.....
