Because you didn’t have stabilizer in it. Sounds like. The soon pulls all the chlorine out without the cyanuric acid to help stabilize the chlorine.

This post tells me you know or learned nothing about water chemistry for a pool. YOU were causing your own problems with the pool water. The shock and tablets were driving your ph down and driving your stabilizer up to a point that the chlorine was stabilized too much and could not sanitize the water or algae in the water.

Muritic acid will drive your ph down just like the shock or tabs, baking soda will bring your ph up or the plaster in the pool if you have a gunite pool will cause ph to rise also.


I have had a pool for 13 years and have never had any issues you have mentioned.

Mine is saltwater. I keep the salt ppm between 2800 and 3200 and have 0 issues.

I add a bag of salt ($7) about once a month during the summer, add mutator acid to keep the ph right, and sometimes add some stuff for the alkalinity.

Been shocked how easy it really is to take care of.

We put in a 20’x40’ a few years ago. This will be our third summer with it. It’s salt water. Anyone that says a salt water pool is a pain to deal with, either has absolutely no idea what they are doing or just like to gripe. I keep mine open year round, and have to add a bag of shock about every 2-3 weeks during the winter when the water temp gets below 65 degrees. Other than that, I just clean out the skimmers, catch basket, and automatic vacuum once a week. It take about 5-10 minutes. When warm weather rolls around, I shock the pool about every 10 days with the super chlorinator (no chemicals, free chlorine). I check the chemicals about every three days which isn’t a problem because we are out there pretty much every afternoon. I get my salt levels right at the beginning of the season and then have to add a couple bags through the summer. It probably costs me a little under $200.00 a year in shock, salt, conditioner, and muriatic acid. Once you get your water chemicals right, the conditioner is a game changer for helping keeping them that way. I will say to plan on a good bit more for an installation budget if you have to add a retaining wall (I did too), fence, sod, extra concrete, etc…Would I do it again? Yep.

No. It was 1 (relatively minor) reason out of 4 or 5 reasons. Ultimately, we just weren't as happy there as we thought we would be when we bought it. It was nearly 3 acres, there was the pool, and it was a 50+ yr old house. We have 2 kids (10 and 8) that both do extracurricular activities. Between their school, my son's baseball, my daughters gymnastics and horseback riding, I was spending every spare moment I had doing yardwork, cleaning the pool, or general "upkeep" on an old house......and there still weren't enough hours in the day.

We gave it a year and decided "this isn't for us", so we bailed. Fortunately, we got a good deal on it and the market improved over that year, so we made a pretty good bit on it. We love the house we're in now, so it all worked out. "The Lord works in mysterious ways"

I've never owned a pool, but of the people that I know that have one - they all recommend a salt water pool. Most of those same people either love them or hate them, there is not a lot of middle ground.

My pool is a pain in the butt, but I love seeing my kids and their friends using it all summer. We have chlorine and the generator went out last year so I had to finish out as chlorine pool. Salt was way easier to keep the chemicals balanced. Everything has gone up in price substantially!!!

I can understand that! My 4,5, and 8 year old keep us running.

I put our 18x36 liner pool in Sep 2000. I bought the kit from a local builder and cut no corners. It’s wood walls, salt water, led lights, deck jets, diving board, etc. I paid to have the hole dug and the sanded cement done. We poured 19 yards around it and ended up just over 18k in it. I did everything else and it was a job but we saved around 17k. The mark up on pools is crazy. Everything is automated except putting in chemicals and cleaning skimmers. I grew up with a chlorine pool and lost the battle on this one. Go salt and don’t look back, we literally do nothing!!

I hear ya I've had 2 baseball practices n a basketball game just with my youngest 2 this evening...wife is getting a pool this year n I'm wondering how it's gonna play out...I don't reckon my life will change much just priorities...I'm on the go non stop anyway lol

Over the years I've had several friends with assorted in ground pools and most of them were sick of them within a few years. A good friend just filled in his 6 year old pool last year. When My family had a hankering for one I decided on an above ground for two major reasons.

1) above ground is way less expensive
2) above ground is way easier to remove all evidence of it's existence

I started with chlorine but switched it over to salt after one summer. After I think two more summers, my daughter grew bored of it and my wife and I were done with pools. So see #2 above. The only part of it I regret is going with chlorine in the beginning.

Yep. I live on a lake, so I just built a pier and a sandbar instead of a pool.
No chemicals or salt required.
