I know already everybody is going to say don’t do it, but we’re are getting quotes to install a pool and wanted to get some thoughts from those that have them. I grew up with a pool and really enjoyed it so I want my family to be able to do the same as my 5yr old loves the water more than anyone I know. That being said we are looking at getting a 18x36 vinyl saltwater pool. Growing up we had a chlorinated pool as salt water wasn’t a thing back then, from what I hear the saltwater system is a lot less hassle not having to deal with the chemicals. I was thinking a could get one for around 40k, but from what I’m seeing it will be close to double that ( I do need a small grade wall on one side and that includes a fence). Did the covid spike in all things outdoors drive up the cost plus the materials being higher or is that typical pricing?

5 years ago it it would have been 20-25.
I’m selling our house now that has a pool. If you ever see me with another one, you can be guaranteed that I have won the lottery and the cost of paying someone to take of everything is insignificant to me. If we had not been planning to sell and build then I would have filled it in 5 years ago.

We have had our gunite pool since 09. Never have regretted it. Been great thing for our family. Yes your build time will be longer than quoted and the price will be inflated like everything else right now.

Got ours 2 years ago same size was a little over 30 but no wall or fence. The maintenance so far is little to none just keep skimmers clean and make sure salt is right. We had a Polaris cleaner put in and have it on a timer and it keeps pool clean.

Geez $20k increase over 2 year hurts. All my quotes have been right at $50 for pool and concrete apron only. I think lack of installers and demand is one of the biggest issues. I’ve talked to a few that we’re already booked until next year.

Price a finite too just so you know. I built one last year and went with finite over vinyl and fiberglass because it wasn’t that much more expensive.

I don’t think anyone is getting a pool for $40k right now.

I fought my wife for years on a pool... she is finally at the point of "glad we did not get a pool". Our neighbors filled theirs in last month. During the summer if we have the grandkids, we take them to the river/sandbar. I think they like it better than a pool.

I sold a house last year with a pool. That was my first and last one.

Salt will be less hassle, but over all they are about the same cost to maintain over time. When, not if, the chlorinator has to be replaced on the salt water system......you will make up for all the money you saved on chemicals from not having a chlorine pool. It is syphilis or gonorrhea. Pick your poison.

Only way I will own another pool is if I am rich and I can have a hot messican woman that looks like Salma Hayek to take care of it for me.

I don’t think anyone purchases a pool for it to be a savings. Is there monthly/maintenance cost? Sure….

But the amount of time my kids (4,5, and 8) spent outside last summer and in the afternoons after school made it worth it. I enjoy drinking my coffee in the mornings around it, I also enjoyed eating lunch/dinner with the wife outside around it.

We are outside most of the time when the weather is right and it has been great. No regrets.

We put in a 16x36 liner pool 5 yrs ago. Paid 21,750 with a little extra cement and a salt system and Polaris.

Build it on a hill. My pool is on flat ground and I have trouble with water getting behind the liner.
Have fall on all 4 sides.

We go to hotel pools and boating at the lake enough get our fill of swimming anymore. Had one of those cheap 15' x 4 ft. deep ones when the kids were little and it was the best $300 we ever spent. They quickly outgrew it when they became teenagers. I would consider one of the cheap above ground ones you can get for a reasonable price. Some are very nice for only a couple grand. No way I would spend $20k or more for a permanent one. Plus you have to be very very careful with small kids around.

Neighbor had a $35k one put in two years ago and is already sick of all the upkeep and maintenance, etc. Plus it took up half his backyard.

I will say this... growing up my grandparents put in a pool for us grandkids and we loved it. Our grandparents lived 8hrs away but we would go stay 2 weeks during the summer and I am not sure what we would have done without the pool. But my grandmother worked on that pool constantly... cleaning.. testing the water.. etc etc.

I check mine once a week and use less than $200 a year on chemicals

had a pool for 13 months....kids loved it but I hated it. keeping it clean wasn't bad until way on into the summer when it got good and hot. Water temp regularly got low/mid-90's because it got no shade at all and you couldn't keep enough chemicals in it to stop algae from turning it green. I was putting choline tablets in it constantly and was going through 5-7 pounds of shock/week. And I was never able to get the PH where it was supposed to be. No matter what I did or how much stuff I dumped in it, the best I ever got the PH was on the [very] low end of "normal"...usually it was noticeably low.

Words cannot express how glad I am to not be messing with it anymore.

If you pay a lawncare service to cut your yard, they'll usually charge significantly more for cutting around a pool. I know of some that won't take yards with a pool.
