FWIW, ATF does not have a registry. My definition of a registry is a database that can be queried for responses on demand. Like a spreadsheet, but capable of being searched by name, or date, or type of weapon. The ATF has none of that.

What the ATF does have in its out of business record center are a mountain of paper Form 4473's from closed dealers and manufacturers, and then even more of those that were scanned into microfiche. Microfiche is simply a film image of a paper record. There is no index. You have to manually search it just like paper, by looking at each page. ATF stores microfiches records by dealer, and then by date. These are not searchable by name, date or any other keyword.

Cynical, I would still have concerns. There’s freeware on the Internet that can search human writing. It’s not hard to do.

There's a lot more things above this on the "worry me" list. I mean, ATF can't even have a computer to view the microfilm. Freeware on the internet doesn't run on a microfilm display.

Fortunately, also, the GAO audits ATF's compliance with the non-searchable registry laws every few years.

Now people who complain about National Firearms Act stuff have a different point. Their point is even with NFA there shouldn't be a registry of machineguns, silencers, short barreled rifles & shotguns, and any other weapons that are owned by us citizens. I get that argument, but I'm not going to die on that hill. I'm just happy we can have them, even they are on a registry of their own.

That is what I previously thought but really there is no telling what they have.

States have registries so why can't the federal government? I think it would be optimistic to think the federal government would follow the law honestly all the time. The supreme court has ruled for them to reinstate the stay in Mexico policy too but are they doing that? Some might say so but I wouldn't.

Under certain cough interrogation techniques some might crack in this hypothetical situation. By this hypothetical point there are lots of other cough factors to consider though.

It’s an out of business record center. You know what’s impossible to create? A database when you don’t have records. When you buy a gun, your Form 4473 never leaves the dealer’s place of business until they close down. In the southeast, you know what doesn’t get transmitted for a background check? The make, model and serial number of whatever you’re buying. Point being, no one in the government knows what you have, and couldn’t know what you have, until the dealer shuts down. Those are facts. After that, if you think the government has a searchable database of transactions from closed dealers, I have some stellar snow ski resort property in Mississippi to sell you.

There’s way more government overreach to actually worry about than a nonexistent database.

Out of business record center, they don't have records! Contradiction?

I'll say this, you trust government more than I do.

I don't think you looked at the videos/links either.

According to GOA it is a searchable database.
