I was a corporate account rep for years. The last 3 of those were spent in a quasi compliance role. Over the years I had become pretty proficient in OSHA1910.179 and ANSIB30 related Crane regs. In doing so we developed a Crane Compliance GAP analysis. I’ve been in most Nucor, IP, Westrock, and ALCOA mill in North America. Not to mention Power Plants in multiple countries. Most of these companies did a pretty good job. There were exceptions though.

A steel mill in Indiana was the worst. I was called in following a Crane related fatality. A technician was on the bridge performing a PM. A missing coupling guard snagged his harness. I spent two days in the plant and climbing on every Crane. Every single coupling guard was missing. The company removed them to reduce PM time and inspection time on the couplings. They were still adamant they had done no wrong even after the death. It was the only time in my career I called a customer an idiot.
