Evil is out there for sure. The Light is out there too, so we shall not fear.

27 years. Good gracious, think how much tax money that we paid went to feed and house this dude for 27 years. It is a fact that life in prison without parole is cheaper on the tax payers than the death penalty. True, and from a Christian's standpoint, as long as that person is alive he has a chance for Salvation. Once he is executed, his fate is sealed. Just a couple of reasons why I'm not a huge fan of the Death Penalty, along with the fact that it is disproportionately weighted against the lower socioeconomic level of society. Having said that, I will again say that if anyone ever deserved it, it was Matthew, and I dealt with a lot of bad, bad people. The only way to make the death penalty a deterrent is to make it swift and certain, of which it is neither. The only real purpose it serves is to remove a bad person from society and that could be done much cheaper to the taxpayers with a Life without Parole sentence as Skinny points out.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

I have no clue whats going on here Sorry Ben but I was not going to link the AL.com story since it has too many inaccuracies, even though they don't change the gist of the story. Makes you wonder about some of their other reporting?

MAny years ago, I read that execution is only the third leading cause of death among death row inmates. The two ahead of it were natural causes and suicide. I don't know if this is still true. 27 years is too long.

I drove by the road going to Holman yesterday afternoon around 3pm. They had the gate down and law enforcement posted. You always know an execution is coming that night when you see that setup. I really hate assignments with corrections. Especially inside Holman.

Jawbone, one article I read said he was intellectually disabled. What is your opinion on that? To be specific it says “intellectually disabled black man”. Do you think he was disabled in some way or is this another race baiting statement by the media?

Do you think he was disabled in some way or is this another race baiting statement by the media? He wasn't bright by any means. Was he intellectually disabled or just stupid, I don't know? Part of it is like old bowhunter says, he had dead eyes. No matter what you said or how you tried to interact with him, the look in the article picture is what you got. I can only describe it as soulless. He and his brother were badly abused as children so the question I have is this what made him like he was or was he just plain evil from the start? The old Nature vs. Nurture argument. I guess a clue would be that Julius went through the same abuse, was bad like Matthew, but you could interact with him. I guess that is why they didn't have a double execution last night.

I work at a hospital, behavioral health. I see alot of.kids who never get a good start in life. Parents are on drugs, incarcerated, dead. There is a lot of kids being raised by their grandparents. I've seen the empty stare in a few kids and know they probably won't end up in a good place.

Explain how the death penalty is weight against the lower socioeconomic group. Not being argumentative, I just don’t understand it.

We have a foster. that court gave back to dope head parents. When she was transitioning to her biological parents home from us, she would cling to us and cry and beg (I mean serious beg) us to go back home with her. It was horrible dropping her off. They'd keep her a few days and send her back to us to babysit for a few weeks, rinse repeat for 18 months. She was 2-3 when this was going on and when she'd realize she was being dropped off no matter what, she'd check out. You could see the blank look in her eyes. She'd punt. She was unable to cope and deal with the abandonment over and over. And God only knows what kind of neglect, abuse and general dumbassery she witnessed there. When we picked her up, it would take her a few hours for the zombie to turn into our beautiful, happy little girl. We've had her back semi-permanent again for the last few months. Lord only knows what kind of issues that trauma is going to manifest as. Right now it's clinginess, repeatedly telling us she wants to stay with us, please don't take me back, etc.. For no reason, she'll just do that. I try to lay with her to get her to sleep and she will reach over and pat my head 40 times to make sure I'm still there.
I don't make judgements on things I know nothing about, but I can sympathize with any human raised as you've described. They pay the bill for the raising they got. Who's to say they wouldn't have turned out sorry anyway, but they never got the chance. This guys mother should have held his hand with him in the electric chair. She put him on society's radar. She should pay a price as well.

The people with money can hire teams of fine lawyers, psychologists, private investigators, forensic experts, etc. to start with. Those that depend on Gov't appointed lawyers, psychologist, investigators, forensic people, etc. have very limited resources they can use.

If a parent can’t make good after the first time, they don’t need to gamble with a child’s well being after that.

FYI, in the mid 80's or so a child died while in foster care and the state DHR was sued. They entered into a Consent Decree where DHR agrees to do everything possible to return a child to the parents. I think the parameters of this need to be reexamined.

Jawbone, thank you for all you do for these kids and society as a whole, it is obvious you care deeply and are trying to help correct; and, at some level raise these kids to be productive members of our society.

Thank you, but I am retired now and hunt, play, and take it easy. There is no way I would want to be involved in LE today. This is just a milestone for me in what was my career, albeit a sad one. Another one I recall was the first murder I responded to in 1986 when a man was shot across the street from the police department and ran and collapsed on the PD front steps. My partner asked him "Who shot you?" and he just looked and responded "It don't matter, I'm going to die anyways." He was right and the murderer was caught, convicted and served his full sentence. The milestone was that before I retired I had to arrest him for another murder he committed.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.
