I see people talking about truing up or blueprinting Remington 700 receivers when they build rifles. How necessary is this...? Is this a "must-do" prior to screwing on a barrel? I am collecting parts for a rifle for 600 yd. competition and curious about this.

Any PRS or F-class guys here that can answer this?

Sorry for the dumb question, but I am a service rifle guy and this is not my area of expertise.

I am no expert. I would say if your only looking for a 600 yard rifle you can easily do that without spending the money. With that said, if I was that far along (barrel swap ETC) I would spend the time to do so. It really doesnt take a lot of effort to make this happen. I imagine if your having the rifle built, they will suggest you do those steps to ensure better accuracy. What caliber are you thinking? I shoot my 308 out to 600 with great success and its a factory remington 700vs with a load custom tailored to its preference. Its addictive, be forewarned.

Imo it all depends how good the receiver was machined from the get go.if it's good and square to the barrel face then probably not much gained if more than a few thousandths then it needs a lil help

Jason, I'm going to do two rifles, both on Rem 700 SA receivers. One in .223 and the other in a 6mm cartridge. Probably 6mm Creedmoor or 6x47 Lapua.

If I’m already dropping a lot of coin on the project, I would have it done. It doesn’t really add much to the cost of the project, and you know you are getting the most out of things you can get. If you skip it you will always question how much better would it be and to go back and have it done will cost a lot more than doing it the first go round.

Funny, I have two rifles exactly the same. I shoot the 223 99% of the time. When I move to the 308 its just like I never changed. Other than the difference in dialing up. Those 6mm's have a TON of support by the bullet manufacturers, not a bad way to go. Thats one of the reasons I like a .308 (in any cartridge) is that there is so many different weights and designs that can be used accross the board. Just easy to find something that works. .243 is very similar, to me.

Do you already have the Rem700 actions? If not I’d start with a better option like Defiance before I paid for two new actions AND to have them blueprinted.

Yep, already got the actions on hand, so that is what I am going with.

If you are putting on a new barrel I recommend blue print always. What are you building?

Don’t cut corners, probably wouldn’t matter if 600 is your goal but those cut corners add up and make the whole gun less accurate. Spend the money and end up with a accurate rifle

it is also a one time deal. Will not have to do it on the next barrel swap.

Lap the lugs, and get a good .250 recoil lug. The biggest problem I have found is the crap recoil lug Remington used. I build my own rifles, and have several that are tack drivers, spend your money on a good barrel, and stock.

The answer to the questions = YES unless you build a fugly Savage. I honestly can't tell a difference on a Savage build I'd say it's a waste of money there.

Any other action, custom, factory.... doesn't matter... do it regardless. It's the foundation of the house.

If I was set on using the 700 actions I'd do what 2T said above.
Otherwise, if I'm building a competiton gun I'd sell both and go with a Defiance or something along those lines

Gundoc has a good point. I would sell both to fund a Bighorn Origin short action build you can build a gun that can be used as a trainer in 223 Rem, 308 win, and 6.5 Saum. It take's me 5 minutes to go from 223 Rem to 6.5 Saum using the same action/ stock. If you want more information pm me. Northland shooting supply have the action's in stock now. I have all 3 bolt heads from Bighorn. If you are going to shoot PRS and don't handload go with the 6 Creedmoor. If you handload go with either a 6 GT or 6 Dasher.

Hornady has several new offerings for the gt, I’m sure they’re like hens teeth to find but they’re out there.
