For the first time in about 7 years my job will allow me to bowhunt. Usually I had to work 6-7 days a week during bowseason and would only hunt a couple times a year. this year Im off every weekend and Im excited to get the time to scout and bowhunt like I use to. Then I find out that I likely have a torn Labrum which will require surgery in my right/pull arm. Im gritn my teeth and shooting without too much pain right now. I go for an MRI monday to confirm but heres the dedication part. Told my doctor that he wouldnt touching me till after bow season, and that I could shoot my rifle left handed if needed in November. My wife says Im crazy, I told her this is normal behavior for Hunter and why we dont wear skirts. What you guys think ???

if I were you I would see about getting a X bow. There's no need in possibly making things any worse. Pain is an indicator of bodily damage. NO i don't shoot a x bow. I think they are great for people who are injured, handicapped, or too old to pull back a bow.

Hey I have pulled the same stunt except it was my elbow. I actually had surgery (Back to Back Years) to do some repair on my funny bone nerve and remove spurs/cyst before Spring Training started back up. I made sure before each surgery to set my bow to make sure it was drilling. Oct. 1st (1st surgery) and 3rd (2nd) was my surgery Oct. 15 I was in my stand. I couldn't use a climber so I either sat on the ground, lock on, or ladder stand. My DR. was a big time hunter as well and pleaded with me not to go hunting but I couldn't help it. Needless to say I told myself that I would only shoot a wall hanger (so I wouldn't have to pull my bow back) and of course that didn't happen so it turned out okay.

A Labral tear in the glenoid (soft cupping tissue for the shallow ball and socket joint which keeps the humerus from dislocating) can be improved by immobilizing the joint in a sling. If you've already experienced dislocation of the shoulder...called a Bankart lesion...it might be best to get the surgery. Chances are another dislocation will occur at a very inopportune time and place.

Otherwise...you could immobilize the joint in a sling, take NSAiDs meds, and hope for the best. But if surgery is already decided...it's probably too late for immobilization to help because the Labral cuff is compromised pretty bad.

The recovery period is long w/surgery...6 mos. if I recall correctly...maybe shorter w/arthroscopic surgery. Maybe a second opinion would help you decide ??

Personally, I would have the surgery to prevent further damage by repeated dislocation and possible arthritis, and look to the next season. And...what if the shoulder dislocates while at full draw ? Ouch !...and it could be disastrous.

Best of luck in whatever you choose, though.

Thanks for the advice, I get the MRI today and meet with the Doc on Thursday. It actually doesnt hurt much when I draw my bow. It hurts more sometimes by just simple movements. Hung some stands this weekend and I climbed with no problem so If surgery is needed and recovery is that bad, I will wait till after January to have it.

I had labrum surgery in August of 2003....I was in an immobilizer for 3 weeks, followed by a sling for 2 weeks...I wasn't able to move it past 45 degress for another month...Just a FYI for the shooting LH...However, I was being very cautious while rehabbing to be ready for spring baseball...

Now, I ended up tearing it again the next spring (~March 04) after 4 months of rehab and easing back into throwing/hitting...No 2nd surgery and been used to the pain for years...

So, summing up my twocents ...If you do have surgery, I would be take care of it for a good 6 months to let it completely heal...if not, you too could possibly be on the road of learning to deal with the pain or surgery #2....
