Got a surprise from santa, a st croix 5’0” panfish rod. I’m going to need a new reel for it. I basically drown minnows around lights and structure. I use 4lb fluorocarbon almost exclusively. Got any suggestions on a cheap spinner?

I really like a shimano nexave. Theyre not really expensive and small enough for the light line.

As far as bang for the buck on a spinning reel, I like the Shimano Sienna fx 2500, smooth drag, good line capacity, I fish 6lbs flouro and it handles it really well. Think it was like $24.99. My .02

I like small reels for Crappie, but you reach a point where a small spool will start negatively affecting most lines that you use. I'm more
prone to put extra light line on a bigger reel. Just me.

Hard to beat a Pflueger president reels, those jokers are smooth. I would get one size larger than you think you need, bigger spool cast better.

Hard to beat a Pflueger president reels, those jokers are smooth. I would get one size larger than you think you need, bigger spool cast better. My recommendation as well. I use 20's.

A lot cheaper and does the same job that the more expensive ones do. If it breaks in seven or eight years, just buy a new one. You will still be way ahead.

A 5' rod is pretty short. I would want to use a light weight reel with one that small. I have a Lew's laser lite in 75 size that I have enjoyed using with light tackle. It's only about $30 and has 7 bearings and is pretty smooth. But I haven't compared it to the others in it's class, so consider that before listening to me.
I asked about spinning reels on here back in the spring and a lot of folks recommended the Lew's line. I wound up buying a custom pro model for my drop shot rig and it is a good reel. I also got one of the standard Speed Spins for another rod. It's the same reel with fewer bearings and some plastic where the other one is metal. It seems to work just as well, but isn't quite as smooth. The laser lite has some graphite parts to cut down on weight, and I use it as a crappie outfit. I was surprised by the quality of this reel, considering how cheap it is.

I’ve got several Pfleugers and they’re fine and is cheap in todays world, but if you want to spend about $30 more go with a Diawa Fuego LT. There is a noticeable difference

Off subject. But I’ve swapped most all my shooting and casting rods to 6’ and 7’ H&H hurricane rods and H&H reels. Super light set up and had a ton of backbone
But for what you got a President would be good choice.
A friend, the Bible and a banker will get you though about anything.
