What kind of scouting do you do and what resources do you utilize to pick the spots you hunt?
If you’re just going in blind and hoping to see deer the success rate isn’t gonna be very high. Boots on the ground preseason to identify travel corridors, creek crossings, bedding areas, food sources, etc plus the use of good topo maps to locate pinch points and saddles is a good place to start. Also like joshm28 pointed out, deer are creatures of edges. Whether it’s hardwood to pine or mature timber to cutover, they love cruising edges. Anytime I’m hunting a new spot that I haven’t had time to effectively scout the area, you can bet the house on me hunting an edge of some sort.

Which section or area of Talladega NF do you hunt? I usually go 2-3 times each season east of Sylacauga.

I've seen plenty of deer sign at all the public lands I've been to in the state. There's no shortage from what I've seen. They're just good at not getting killed. The real work in public land hunting happens during scouting in the off season.

I have yet to see a deer on any Alabama public land in the last ten years of hunting. There are literally zero deer on much of the states public land and even fewer turkeys If you haven't seen a deer on public land in the last ten years....your hunting skills just suck.
I had much rather be tried by twelve than carried to my grave by six!!!!

Which section or area of Talladega NF do you hunt? I usually go 2-3 times each season east of Sylacauga. I have been in the same area I believe you're talking about. I've hunted fairly close to those watersheds all year.
