I know I should use hearing protection, and in a shooting house it's easy enough. In the woods sometimes things transpire quickly and extra time and movement required make using that strategy hard to implement in the heat of the moment.

Good point about poachers though, I never thought of that. Screwups always mess things up for everyone.

You can get some of those foam plugs that are made on a plastic band. Good to leave a pair in each shooting house. I carry one in my pack to use when "doe rolling". I put it around my neck and when a doe train comes I slip them on. When rut is in and I'm only gonna shoot once I don't use it. Works good. wink

I call TOTAL BULLSHIT on this. TOTAL ABSOLUTE BULLSHIT! To own a Class 3 item you pay for it first. Centerfire rifle suppressors start at around $500 and go above $3000. PAID UP FRONT while your Class 3 dealer keeps your suppressor locked in his safe. Then you make out a check for $200 to the Dept of Justice and send that with 2 copies of the Form 4 to the Dept of Justice while your dealer locks the suppressor up in his safe. The ATF cashes your $200 check and puts your Form 4 in an already backed up stack of Form 4s. When your Form 4 gets it's chance to be "looked at" the examiner submits your info from the Form 4 to the FBI for an extensive background check. 2 to 3 months have passed and your dealer still has your suppressor locked in his safe. If you pass the background check they approve the Form 4 and mail it to the dealer who has your suppressor locked in his safe and he will contact you to come get it. Total time elapsed is currently running 6 to 7 months for the scenario I just laid out.

Now, convince me that a man that has spent at least $700 (and probably closer to $1500)and a 6-7 month wait while being cleared by the FBI is gonna run out and start poaching......I say again.....BULLSHIT! Poachers are gonna do their dirty work with whatever weapon they choose but I'd have to have proof that somebody went thru the lengthy, expensive legal process to obtain a suppressor and then used it for poaching....

I'd like to see a printed report of an arrest in Alabama where an offender was busted using a suppressor when poaching..........post 'em if you got 'em......

From: The Game Wardens & Poachers

"The poacher who is dropped off at a location and hunts either with a
crossbow or a rifle with a silencer is very difficult to apprehend. This type
of poacher does not brag about his kills and he only hunts by walking,
leaving no vehicle tracks or sounds. He is only caught by an experienced
game warden who tries to think as the poacher would."

Modern Poaching

Poaching for necessity is not much of an issue today. Though there are people who hunt or fish for food, they comprise a small fraction of the larger problem. In fact, Pennsylvania Game Commission Bureau of Wildlife Protection Director Richard Palmer stated in a testimony for House Bill 2205, "The causes of poaching vary, but the myth that most poachers are committing their offenses to provide food is in reality not even a fraction of a percentage of all cases prosecuted. Often, modern poaching is done by criminals driving $30,000 vehicles, using expensive night-vision technology, illegal silencers on the firearms, and often military-style rifles" [source: Pennsylvania Game Commission].

TOTAL FAIL ......the example you posted is an essay, editorial, psychological analysis, etc of a poacher.......or other 'report' about that mentions ILLEGAL silencers in PENNSYLVANIA........nothing to do with ALABAMA

Find me an arrest report/newspaper article reporting the arrest of an Alabama resident that was the legal/lawful owner of a legally possessed suppressor that was caught and convicted of poaching with the suppressor.

I arrested a Florida man in 1987 for night hunting with a silenced 308. Convicted in state court for night hunting and Federal Court for the illegal silencer.

just kidding Wiley, never heard of anyone getting caught in Alabama. I had it on good info that a fella in south Alabama was using one some, never saw it or caught him. I have seen em use a crossbow before they became legal in archery season.

Wiley, Tell everyone how you really feel!

JKidding, I have been watching the process for the certification of all the paperwork that goes into it. Watched my buddy go through packets of paperwork because every piece's serial number has to be logged and described. like I said he has paid, in advance, for a Christmas present to himself. Its chambered in 5.56 and will only make it to the allowed ranges and the farm for target shooting and pending zombie apocalypse.

I have a SWR Spectre II ($320, shipped) currently pending on a Form 3 for transfer from http://www.silencedamerica.com to my local Class III SOT. Once it gets approved and ships here, then I have to file the Form 4 and pay the tax, then wait 6-7 months before it's mine. At least my dealer is also my next-door neighbor, so I can demo the can from time to time in his presence during the wait period. laugh

I second the recommendation of Liberty Suppressors out of Trenton, Ga. I know David and he is a good man.

Liberty Suppressor demo in Ga about 3 years ago.
That video will give you an idea of what can be done with full power or subsonic loads.

David's Bro in law, his wifes Bro, works in the tool and die shop with me. He moonlights at David's shop. They do some cool stuff. BIL says a .300 whisper with a can would be a poachers dream, loudest thing bout it would be clicking the safety off and cycling the bolt. eek

I have played with a lot of stuff that David has made and it is impressive to say the least. He did some work for me (not suppressor work) Everything is always top notch. He stays after me but I have not set up my trust yet and CLEO won't sign.

The Bolt gun with the Bombadier in the video is very impressive. When you pull the trigger all that you hear is a rush of gas and then the sonic crack of the bullet down range. By the time you hear that crack the ebullet has hit the target.

His 22 suppressors are so quiet that the sound of the hammer falling is louder than the report of the gun.

Wiley David can cost you a lot of money real quick.

That can't be true Gunslinger. No way in heck a poacher is going to risk his truck, his freedom, AND his silencer by poaching. laughup
