I have been on this strech of river all my life and have never seen one. This photo was supposedly taken below the Claiborne Lock and Dam on the Alabama River by a Corps of Engineer employee. What do you think this is in this picture?

Looks like a VERY lost seacow.

That thing is a LONG way from home.

No doubt a LONG way from home...they have been showing up in Mobile Bay more frequently over the past decade, but I haven't ever heard of one that far north/inland. Warm winter probably has something to do with it.

If it's a manatee he'll be dead when the water temp gets below the high 60's.

Yep, there has been a few killed the past winters down here in the bay due to temps. Not terribly intelligent animals.

They reportedly have more photos than this one, too.

Seems like a few years ago they had a 4 or 5 foot shark at the Claiborn Lock and dam.

Bull Sharks are one(if not the only) shark that can live long periods of time in fresh water. I think there was a big one that got trapped in an inland Lake in Australia after Cyclone flood waters receded. ...couldn't find that story but here is another example:

breeding population 6 trapped Bull sharks
