Early models had lots of issues. My wife has a 2018 Expedition and has been a great vehicle. My work truck is a 2020 F150 Lariat. The motor has been great. The quality of the rest of the truck has sucked.

I saw alot of talk about putting a catch can on the ecoboost engines. I think that has to do with the really thin oil they run now days, and the low tension rings they run to reduce friction. Rather than suck the oil back into the intake system, the catch can will stop it. On the first gen EB, which a 2012 would be. Not needed on current gen.

My 2016 F150 with a 3.5 Ecoboost has been flawless. I have 154,000 miles on it and have owned it since new. I have not tuned it and done any performance upgrades, so that may be in my favor. You'll hear and read about timing chain and cam phaser issues on them, but I haven't had it on mine. I drive it sanely and don't abuse it, and maintain it properly. I am not planning on getting rid of it any time soon either. Same here. Just gave my 16 to my son last March when he turned 16. I wouldn’t have let him have the truck if it had the stock size tires. It was a rocket ship (for a truck) that way. I added a 2” leveling kit and 295/70-18 Coopers which slowed it down a fair amount. Love it. It’ll SMOKE a 5.0 in performance or towing imho. I’d buy another in a heartbeat. If it craps a turbo or throttle body I’ll fix it. So far so good. Haven’t had ANY trouble with the truck.

Both my sons are driving a 2013 f150 with eco boost. One has 215,000 miles and no problems and the other has 130,000 and I have replaced two blower motor resistors in it and paid a grand to have the water pump and thermostat replaced this week.

I got an ‘18 3.5 and have had zero issues. Dad has a ‘16 2.7 and zero issues. Brother in Law has a ‘15 5.0 with zero issues. We all went with the best deal at the dealership at that moment. None of us regret what we bought.

I had a ‘17 and it got the rattles at 75k miles. Was going to cost $5k to fix even though I had a power train warranty and it was under recall. Ford made me mad. I own a tundra now.

Got a 2016 3.5 with 92,000 miles. Its got individual intakes feeding each turbo, throttle body spacer, and a 75 hp tune that requires 93 octane. Cuts off in 4th gear at 130. Wont hook til halfway through 2nd with traction control on. Put a water pump on at 90,000 and will do another one at 180,000. Got buddies running durajunks, cummins, and strokes…..they roll slow around the ecoboost, I’ve done spanked all of em any way they want to try. I also have a F-250 powerstroke and a 5.4 triton. 5.4 is got 350,000 on it with a buncha motor mods. I am religious on maintenance but I drive em like they stole. Ecoboost works like a diesel the more air you give it the higher the fuel mph gets.

I had an 2019 expedition with the 3.5. Variable cam tensioners went out under warranty twice. I traded it and they loaned it back to me for a weekend trip so my new one could be transferred the following Monday. They took possession Friday morning. Loaned to me Friday mid morning. It broke again on my trip but still ran even though it went briefly into limp mode. I brought it to them Monday as requested and drove the new one away. And yes it’s a noticeable rattle especially when first started.

Seems like enough problems mentioned to sway me towards a Toyota.
