Give Ashville, NC a try. Downtown area has interesting shops, bars, Biltmore estate is there. I hate the traffic in PF/Gatlinburg. You are still close enough to the park to enjoy it as well, Cataloochee valley on that side of the mountains. We were up there back in June for my oldest son's wedding. Ashville will be our next destination for a mountain vacation.

Went to cades cove this morning saw about 7 bears and a few nice does. Sure is one place I could stay all day and hike around. It’s nice right now up here. Trees are still holding color pretty good.

If you enjoyed that, hit up the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail. You get to it by going up the road that the Space Needle arcade is on (I think it's just called "Historic Nature Trail Road" or something like that). It's a 1-way drive that comes out quite a ways up NE of town. It's similar to Cades Cove except it's almost exclusively wooded. The last few times we've been, we've seen more wildlife there than Cades Cove. Also a few cabins, trailheads, etc along it you can stop and explore.

Honeymoon you say? You shouldn't need anything but groceries and a fire back at the cabin.

We went about a mouth ago, hiked Mt Lecont to Rainbow falls, very nice hike but it is tough! we didn't like anything about that downtown area but that weed store did get my attention! Very nice cabin with a hot tub is where we spent most of our time.

Yes, yes, yes.
