Long before we moved to this area, I worked on Sand Mountain. We had a group of contractors in. Their crane operator kept fussing about having to get home Friday night. I asked why and it was so he could fight his chickens. I thought he was kidding. He pulled out a wallet-sized, printed schedule, just like a printed football schedule. It listed the fights in Coosa, Elmore, and Chilton counties, with dates, times, locations, and whether or not it was spurs or razors. I started laughing and he pulled out a 1099 to show me his winnings. I asked about the county sheriffs. “They in on it.”
Another fellow I know from Fayetteville makes an annual trip to Oklahoma for some big tournament there. He says he has left with over$100k in a backpack more than once. Supposedly boxer ROy Jones is a big participant there. Archie Manning use to frequent some local fights Jr. shows up pretty frequently from Florida.

I had a teacher back about 35 years ago who took off every year to go to fight chickens in Mexico.
Someone who has never been would never believe just how a good handler earns his money .
I know one guy who was flown to Guam just to work as a handler for some rich dude.

On a side note it’s happened more than once a handler gets a blade to the femoral artery and dies. Read an article a couple years ago were police raided fight and officer died from a razor on a rooster.

On a side note it’s happened more than once a handler gets a blade to the femoral artery and dies. Read an article a couple years ago were police raided fight and officer died from a razor on a rooster. Those slasher blades are wicked and dangerous for a handler. Always amazed me how they handled the roosters without getting cut to shreds . One lightening fast kick and you'd be cut to the bone.

I went in the pen and picked him up, petted him and when I put him down. I noticed he kind of turned and was eyeing me like he wanted to try me. Had his little chest poked out while he was strutting. Bout the time I fixed my mouth to cuss the little muth...He was on me. In the blink of an eye he closed the gap and went right up my leg. By the time I realized it was ON, he was already waist high. Him being close to my hands, my lightning reflexes kicked in and I slapped him back. As I went for the door, I could see the fear in my wife's eye and her closing the door, fearful it might happen to her. Some how in all the shuffling I got a lucky leg sweep in. It bought me enough time to get to the door. His Spurs were cut into squared off nubbs about a half inch long. Judging by the marks he hit me 20-30 times one of which resulted in a half golf ball sized knot on my shin.standing there beaten and bloody, I had a new found respect for my little buddy.

Had a grey and a kelso I let run loose one time around the shop. You wouldn’t turn your back on em much. As long as you were looking at em you’d be fine.

When I was young I used to go to a big Swap Meet in the Phoenix suburb of Avondale on Saturday mornings. It was one of the less affluent suburbs in the Valley (the Phoenix metro area). I remember seeing some of the prettiest and scariest looking roosters there. The owners treated them like the finest animals on the planet. Some of the men just walked around with them showing them off like a prized show dog. I guess they were generating interest in the night's activities. Cockfighting was a very big thing with the Hispanic Males in AZ. I say they were scary because dealing with my Grandmother's chicken I had to occasionally deal with a mad rooster. My grandfather always kept the spurs cut off sand it was bad enough without them. The thought of dealing with one with first class spurs of other weapons they may have attached was scary for a 10 year old.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.
