Long before we moved to this area, I worked on Sand Mountain. We had a group of contractors in. Their crane operator kept fussing about having to get home Friday night. I asked why and it was so he could fight his chickens. I thought he was kidding. He pulled out a wallet-sized, printed schedule, just like a printed football schedule. It listed the fights in Coosa, Elmore, and Chilton counties, with dates, times, locations, and whether or not it was spurs or razors. I started laughing and he pulled out a 1099 to show me his winnings. I asked about the county sheriffs. “They in on it.”
Another fellow I know from Fayetteville makes an annual trip to Oklahoma for some big tournament there. He says he has left with over$100k in a backpack more than once. Supposedly boxer ROy Jones is a big participant there.
