Long before we moved to this area, I worked on Sand Mountain. We had a group of contractors in. Their crane operator kept fussing about having to get home Friday night. I asked why and it was so he could fight his chickens. I thought he was kidding. He pulled out a wallet-sized, printed schedule, just like a printed football schedule. It listed the fights in Coosa, Elmore, and Chilton counties, with dates, times, locations, and whether or not it was spurs or razors. I started laughing and he pulled out a 1099 to show me his winnings. I asked about the county sheriffs. “They in on it.”
Another fellow I know from Fayetteville makes an annual trip to Oklahoma for some big tournament there. He says he has left with over$100k in a backpack more than once. Supposedly boxer ROy Jones is a big participant there.

I grew up around cock fighting
Had uncles on both side that were heavily involved in it
For the record they can fight natural spurs or trim off the spurs and strap on gaffs or knives
I see nothing wrong with this sport at all My great uncle(Rest In Peace) used to host them across the tri state area. A lot of creativity went into how to keep the club events discreet even though they supposedly operated legally under a very specific clause that meant that had to have club rules posted at all fights. They filled hay fields up with pickups like it was the peanut festival with vendors, attendees, and local politicians. $50/head at the gate and to this day I’ve never seen more cash at any one time
