This is more of a stand hunter issue. In dog hunting, shorty gotta put his own work in. Dad can only help him so much. On the flip side, kids enjoy it alot more for multiple reasons. At an early age they can legitimately be part of the hunt, if it aint nothing but listening for the dogs or helping to catch them. Not having to sit still for so long, picnic snacks and the comradery helps too. During the meet up in between hunts they run around with the other kids like wild Indians. Its more like the traditional rite of passage for young braves. You gotta earn it by working for it and towards it.

Who cares what age other people let their kids hunt? It's their choice and doesn't affect me. I'm a big fan of personal freedom, so let each man decide what way to hunt, what caliber to use, what age he lets his kid shoot a deer, etc.

My grandson is 23 months old. My hope is that he will be ready by the time he is 5. if he can't seal the deal in that season, we'll get him in a high fence when he's 6.

Well it's human nature to want to be the best... I agree with you on it just being human nature…..especially for males….We are programmed by default to be competitive…..It’s some instinctive cave men stuff……Males will turn anything into a competition…..One of the worst things we do to ourselves though is to allow that to dictate our enjoyment of hunting……I think most older men eventually see how silly it is and that’s why they don’t care if they show off a 150 or not……The reality of it for most people is that it doesn’t change their life one bit……It’s like the story about the tour bus full of Hookers and Blow pulling in after you finally kill one…..It aint happening…….Nothing happens……You get up the next day and put your boots on just the same as the day before but with a better screen saver. It’s like fools gold…….It doesn’t mean nearly as much as what we make it out to be and folks spend a lot of time stressing over trying to make it happen.

I haven't seen rice bran do much either this year, except mold. I have green fields that look like a whitetail institute commercial, they are limed and fertilized and the deer are still pounding acorns. And where they are falling is do dang thick, you can't get in their quietly.
I think its harder now than it was when I was younger. Back then you could plant a greenfield and see deer on it every evening. And people killed buck after buck off them. Now unless a club has a rule about shooting doe's on a greenfield, every one that walks out there gets pounded, and then when the rut kicks in, you don't see a buck.
Even the biologist who came out to my club this spring said we needed to kill 15 doe's. We didn't kill 15 deer last year. When your deer density is 30 per square mile on the low side and 60 on the high, and you have 2 square miles, worst case I have 60 deer, and best 120. If I had 120, then I could see killing 15 doe's.
That is why I have planted so many food plots. Even if they are small, they still increase our carrying capacity.

Even if they are small, they still increase our carrying capacity. rice bran is more effective in the cooler months, especially if the rut co-incides with the cooler weather. Mainly do to molding. From what I learned on here, doe killing isn't about carrying capacity, more to do with buck/doe ratio and the stress it puts on the herd if it ain't balanced.

It's definitely easier on my place because when I was a kid I could go several weekends and not see a deer. We managed for years to improve the farm and now have it where you can see 15-20 on a food plot in the evening. Both of my son's were 8 years old when they killed their first deer and although I was with them they aimed the rifle and pulled the trigger themselves. I had a Ruger 10/22 with a scope on it that they practiced with off the front porch for a year or two and by the time they picked up a deer rifle they were pretty dang good with a scoped weapon. I see the same folks who are posting pics of their 4 year old and a dead deer and it's nothing more than an old-fashioned deck measuring contest.

Ya lol...I can this, when I turned 7 I was on my own when hunting...my dad would make sure I got where I needed to be whether a ladder stand or blind then hand me his 44 lever action and would tell me to fire off a round if I needed him before dark. I haven't sat with him since

I know some folks whose kid was home schooled. When their kid "graduated" they asked to borrow my sons graduation gown or whatever its called. Posted his graduation pics on Facebook, then invited folks to the "graduation' party and said, and I quote "if you can't make it to the graduation party just send the graduation presents"

Do not regret growing older, it's a privilege denied to many!

I got mine a CVA singleshot 243 with the youth stock, which has a shorter length of pull. Then loaded it with barnes 80 grain bullets. It doesn't kick hard at all. Then I got an Allen shooting house sandback rest and the gun would literally balance on it. All he had to do was cock it and line it up and squeeze the trigger.
My now 13 year old shot his first deer with the same gun last year when he was 12. He likes it. My 15 year old likes my 30-30 or 7-08 carbine.
Heck I even loaded some 60 grain partitions in 223 and took a scoped AR15 for a while for my youngest. Shoot I might have to take that gun out this year... LOL!!

I think it is great to get them in the woods early and shooting when they are safely able to do so. My son killed his first buck at 7 years old and became a legend at his school. The key is that he has since developed though the phases of a hunter faster than I did with the help of the guys I hunt with. He also helps with the work when he is home from school. Since he is a big, strong kid the guys love having him around for work time. He loves to hunt and the outdoors. I'm thankful that I got lucky and somehow taught him the right way to do it. Now it is time to patiently await grandchildren then the real fun begins. I have 4 grandsons with the oldest just turning 7 and likes hunting with me. The other 3 are not old enough. They are a blast to teach JB!
I came, I saw, so I killed them all......Vern

I like easy. Work is hard enough. And I still like my chances of survival if it ever got hard.
