I've confronted a couple of folks about taking the name of our Lord in vain.

His torture and death by being hung on a cross was the only way for us to avoid the wrath of God for our sins. Chuck Swindoll explains how Jesus struggled with whether or not there was any other way this morning on Insight for Living.

Why not take time to understand why you should never take His name in vain ...

Most people associate “taking the Lord’s name in vain” only with cussing. I’m of the belief that there is a much more serious (and dangerous) problem than a “G-D” or “J-C” being used as an explicative. I consider it “taking the Lord’s name in vain” when a person presents themselves as a “follower of Christ” while not submitting to Christ’s lordship over their life or representing Him well to a watching world.

When an unbeliever hears a “G-D”, they are likely to think this person has a foul mouth. That’s about all.

When an unbeliever sees a person living openly in a way contrary to the gospel, while claiming to be a Christian, they are likely to think this is the norm for Christians and be turned away from the faith.

Hopefully you will never meet my wife. She got her expert training in cussing from her now deceased Dad. Think of Tony Beets from Gold Rush on steroids.

I feel the same about OMG. Just tacky to me. With that said, my biggest struggle in my life today is to rid my sinful mouth and the words that come out of it.

I’m just thankful for His grace, for all have sinned and fall short of His glory.

iam a hardliner on this one. I believe saying golly, gee, oh my gosh, are all forms of it. I really do cringe when watching home remodel shows. I know its widely accepted and that Iam no better than the people that participate in it. Iam not willing to test Gods power on this one, and in the past have seen people struck down after using blasphemy. Just like we don't like getting robo calls, God doesn't like people calling upon his name because they dropped their chicken mcnuggets, its disrespectful.

I figure he finds it much more offensive when someone he created and gave breath and sacrificed his only son for goes days, weeks, or even months without even considering him. Most people who use the Lords name in vain, especially GD, never consider God or what he has made possible in their lives. Alot of people these days are living poor beggerly lives and stepping over the body of Jesus to do it.

You know what is crazy. Almost every American movie produced with a PG 13 or higher uses GD all the time. Jumanji??? Knives Out?? Those were great movies that didn't need any cursing. Heck, even on tv shows like Suits and etc.

If you go watch a muslim show, then it is the cleanest tv in the world. You can watch it with captions in English. I have watched some shows that would match Little House on the Prairie. They were good scripts, no cursing, not even showing blood in the scenes, no gays kissing, great acting and other than them showing the prayer time or giving glory to their god - it really shows how messed up our country is. The culture is destroying the U.S. from within.

I'm amazed at how many grown men have no desire to grow out of using profane language, in general, even if they do not profess to be a Christian. Growing out of that kind of thing is just a sign of maturity. It's even much worse for someone to profess to be a follower of Christ but continue to deny there's anything wrong with profanity. We are to put our old habits away.

I grew up hearing that. I grew up saying it. I used to love watching Southpark. And then when I got saved and really started to understand things, I stopped all that. Doesn't mean I don't slip every once in a blue moon, and man alive do I feel awful. It is usually a direct result of hitting my head that triggers it.

Gee wiz, gee, jeeze, geeze are all, in root form, a euphemism for Jesus. That being said I personally do not look at them the same way as GD or Jesus or Jesus Christ used in that way. My language is bad I will be the first to admit that but I really never use GD or the others. It makes my skin crawl to hear it actually. But I for sure am not gonna start calling out people who say gee wiz lol.

I think you missed my point.

I am 100% against the use of the Lord's name in vain. I'm simply stating that, while "G-D" is one way of using his name in vain, there are others too that extend beyond our words. Reverence for God is absolutely a missing characteristic in the majority of society these days.

I don’t sweat that and I don’t necessarily think that asking God to damn something is necessarily taking His name in vain, it’s foolish but may not be considered taking His name in vain.
What about folks singing Jesus, Jesus, Jesus sweetest name I know….. and their minds are on what they are eating for lunch?
