For moose/black bear specific, and buying a new gun? Give me a 358 Winchester, 9.3x62, or 35 Whelen, ANY day. I can’t foresee shooting either at over 200 yards, and not much will argue with 250+ grains of lead at 2500-2700….
and 338s are just ‘tweener’ stuff to me nothing much more than a 30, and some less than a 35, unless you’re hung up on BCs and have dreams of being Matthew quigly or a tier 1 cool guy….as opposed to just hunting. wink

Anyone would have a hard time convincing the next guy that when they "go out west" hunting... they aren't going to be taking 500 yard shots simply because that's all you see on TV. Most of the Elk I have killed have been in at least some timber and I have probably shot 1 out of a dozen that was further than 250 yards.

It is just not that hard to get within 250 yards of an animal IMO. This is hunting after all. It isn't that hard to get within that range or at least shouldn't be.

I have shot an Elk with .358 and it killed the crap out of it. I take my .358 Elk Hunting sporting a 2-7x. It will kill anything that gets in my way with the appropriate bullet from an AL Hog to an AK Moose. .338 Federal would work too and of course the Whelen. They aren't armor plated.

Would a 308 be sufficient for elk. I’ve got 2 shooting 178 eld-x. I have a 300 win mag shooting 180 ttsx that I would carry for a hunt but I like to take a backup and the next biggest caliber I have is 308. Like one shot said I’m never above buying another rifle but was wondering if my current lineup would work

I might take one of my 308s for elk, OVER a 35 or 338….just because I’m not sure more than a 308 is needed…..spitballing.

If i ever go im taking a 338 . I know what it will do. Shot a 10 pt few years ago at right at 400 yds. Took out 3 ribs and left a huge exit hole.

Two roads diverged in the woods and I took the one with deep ruts, hills and mud.It may be bumpy but WHAT A RIDE!

I’ll likely never own a 338 anything, no matter how many truly big animals I hunted. If I thought I needed that much extra recoil, I’d just use a 375….which probably kicks less, but I can’t foresee anything at normal hunting distances where a .338 is as good as a Whelen or 9.3, or enough better than any 300 mag, to put up with. I know there’s a 338 clan, but I ain’t in it. wink

A 375 H & H does not kick less than a 338 win mag.

That’s subjective, due to impulse, softer case shoulder, and generally being in heavier guns. I’ve had range time with most things, and a bad stocked gun or most 338 mag stuff starts making me take notice, vs even heavier stuff. A 3” 12ga buckshot or turkey load clocks far more ftlbs of recoil than a 338 OR a 375, but isn’t nearly as snappy…..so your perception is different.

Yes, you're typical heavy turkey load kicks more than either. One thing I feel when shooting big 30 magnums and 338 and 375 magnums is the compression. If my sinuses are acting up i will have a pounding headache after shooting just one group with my 338 win mag. Same with my 375 H&H and 300 weatherby.

Well, you’re finally allowed to identify as one, if you want. wink

….compression/shock/blast is a thing. It’s what I feel when shooting (say) 50 BMG, vs the recoil. There’s too many variables that can effect what’s perceived. I’ve put hundreds of rounds through 458WM, 458L, and 460 Weatherby load work guns, that was like shooting a 22 hornet. wink Shooting critters <400#, I don’t see much sense in stuff with huge cases and lots of recoil. Then again, I’ve had a bias for the 35 cal forever, which means the 33 is the equivalent of a west Georgia poly school…..to me.

The 280 Remington will do it all, including moose.
The 280AI and 7mm Rem Mag all will do great.
It all comes down to proper bullet and proper placement.
I have killed two bull elk and more than a handful of cows with a 7mm-08 rifle performance

Old friend of mine out west has killed dozens of elk, moose, Muke deer, caribou ect

All with a .270. Shot a big mountain Lion with a 22.250

I asked him once if he killed that Grizzly he has a rug of with his .270. He laughed and said hell no, I shot him with a .338 Lapua 😂

My grand dad had just about everything North America has to offer mounted including grizzlies, and all were killed with a pump Remington 30-06
