As they come from the factory, 84-85. Has a bigger cab than the 79-83, but still has the factory straight axle.
The 79-83 are bullet proof, but just too small. In 86 started the ifs, which rode better; but has too many places for water to get in. 89-95 are a bigger cab again and except mostly being fuel injected, are pretty much the same truck with a little more room. The first Tacomas (95.5-04) are nice trucks, but the front wheel bearings are a pain in the butt and expensive to change. The bigger Taco (05-15) have transfer case parts that the water messes with.
Mine is a 91 that I swapped a straight axle and 5.29 gears into. It sits on q78 Super Swampers and is a beast. Its been through about 20 seasons of hell in the Flatwoods of Fl following or getting in front of a pack of hounds and just keeps plugging along. I do work on it regularly, but can't fault it for that for what I put it through. There's not much I can't take care of myself on it and I like it that way.
For just knocking around the woods and staying out of the water, I'd take anything between 89 and 2004 that I could get the best deal on.

I’ve been driving my 03 4x4 5 speed 4 cylinder access for 13 years and will drive it till it dies. Has close to 300k miles on it and has been through a lot but still purrs like a kitten. I have had many people offer to buy it on the spot from me over the years but doubt I’ll ever get rid of it. The 01-03 models to me look the best.

I have had six or seven 80-90 model Tacomas. All were very good vehicles. I currently have an 05 Tacoma with 145,000 on it. This one is a nice truck and I am asked to price it all the time. I also have an 05 Four Runner that has only 109,000 on it. It is my daily driver and I love it. The 05's are very dependable vehicles and it is almost impossible to find a good one these days without breaking the bank. To answer the original question, the 05 is my favorite!

My favorite is the 88-94 models I had a 1990 single cab and I beat the crap outa of that thing eventually turned into a crawler but man that was a good truck! I currently drive a 03 four door Tacoma witn over 300,000 on it! It’s been flipped in the yard doing doughnuts to drive anywhere and everywhere and all I’ve ever done to it was regular matience

We (mine but son took it over) have a 1991 4x4, ext. cab, manual transmission V6 that runs like a sewing machine. We can’t hardly drive it anywhere without someone trying to buy it. So. Also has a 2006 Tundra that I bought new off the lot, crew cab, 4x4, 5.7 and it’s been a solid truck.
I’ve owned several Toyota’s and they have all been very good and extremely reliable. They are the ONLY gas burners that I will own. Wish that I could get my hands on a Hilux.
My favorite of all of the Toyota’s that I’ve owned is my 1999 Lexus LX470. It’s a TOYOTA, built in the Toyota Land Cruiser factory in Toyota, Aichi, Japan. It’s a Land Cruiser with more bells and whistles. Mine has the 4.7 liter v8, this is the motor that someone put 1,000,000 miles on. Mine came with factory lockers (central and rear, 1999 was the last year this option was available). I currently have 160,000 miles on it, it’s rides, drives, runs just like new. It’s not for sale.

My daily driver is an 05 four door taco and I have an 88 with 33” Maxus bighorns under the barn. Both will go anywhere I want to go and wouldn’t hesitate to drive either out of state but dang that 88 is absolutely bomb proof.

I have owned 3 Toyota Landcruisers, a 2000, a 2003 and a 2015. Have been second owner on all three. Drove the 2000 and 2003 to over 225,000 miles. Only minor issues and both were excellent on the road and off road. V8, full time 4 wheel drive and range of off-road settings. Wish I still had the 2000. Somewhere around 2013, they added in a lot of soccer mom bells and whistles, but the engine and off road capabilities remained bullet proof. After 60 years, 2021 is the last year that the Landcruiser will be offered for sale in the US.

I have an 02 tundra with 372,000 miles on it and it still runs like a top. I have a 2005 Doublecab I bought a couple years ago with only 79K on it when I bought it. I drive it every day and its a really nice truck.
Doublecab is 4wd. 02 is not. They don't get the best gas mileage but dang they run forever.

My best friend got a 99 Tacoma when we turned 16 in the year 2000. The last time I seen him he was still driving it .

I had a red 89 that I put a ford 302 in with dual exhaust and turbo mufflers. It sounded like a mustang. That was one fun truck !
