Went out tonight, in the dark, with my flashlight, to gather my eggs out of the community laying box. My lid to the nest box is hooked to a hand winch via a cable. I cranked up the lid and went over to the box to get the eggs and put them in my basket. Inside the nest box, I find an ol' possum, eating my eggs. I knew that I had been having a lot of eggs that were laying broken in the nest box but didn't know why. Had no idea a possum was getting into the coop and nest box eating up my eggs. I grabbed that sucka by his tail and swung him 6 or 8 times up against a tree inside the pen. I cracked his skull wide open hitting him against the tree. Throwed his butt into the woods along with what few unbroken but contaminated eggs, out with him. Tomorrow I'm gonna try to find where he was getting in and fix the spot. Also plan to put fresh shavings in my nest box. Danged ol' egg stealin' possum... ...Betcha he don't get no more of my eggs.

My wife could tell you about me beating one to death with a softball bat for getting into our garbage, her version of the story is much better than mine. I can’t stand those nasty things.

I know y’all hate opossums but they love eating bugs. (Ticks)I don’t have chickens so they don’t bother me.

Several years ago I took my Ford Explorer to one of those Jiffy Lube places to get the oil changed. It was one of those older ones that had a pit you walk down in rather than lifts. I get there and there is an older white guy and and a young black kid working there. The black kid is obviously the trainee. The old guy sends the kid down in the pit to loosen the drain plug and unscrew the oil filter while the old guy stays up top to fill the new oil. I’m watching this whole thing unfold from the customer “lounge”. All of a sudden the black kid starts screaming, runs up the ladder and out to the parking lot and the old guy is laughing hysterically. Seems a possum had crawled up in my engine and had dropped on the young kid when he went down in the pit. I watched the old guy grab a long handle wrench and proceed down the ladder. I then heard some thumping and screeching and up the ladder he came with a bloody shirt and a dead possum.

My wife went out just after dark one evening to gather eggs . I went to check on her because it was taking longer than expected. Step out on the back porch and I hear her yelling "please Jesus help me kill this thang". Got down to the coop just in time to see her finish of a possum with a shovel. Lol good times.

I put chain link on the top and sides of my chicken coop then went back and put coated chicken wire over it to keep birds out. Then I dug a 2ft deep trench around it and filled it in with all my scrap pieces of wire then concrete. My dogs have treed a few coons and oppossums on top of it but nothing has managed to get in.

I think you sent a strong message to the opossum community in your neck of the woods.

My wife feeds her 3 cats in our garage , leaves the doors slightly raised for them to come in at night especially in cold weather. I heard a terrible commotion one night and thought we had a burglar in the garage. She was wearing out a poor old possum with her broom . End result: dead possum , broke broom , and having to clean out the garage the next morning.

Years ago when I worked 3-11 at Hanna Steel in Northport they had the back wall of the plant tore out for an expansion. A possum wondered up into the plant beside the mill I worked on. I put on a pair of welding gloves and caught it. We put it in the mill superintendent’s office. I would have loved to have had a video of the mass chaos that ensued the next morning about 6:30.

I have a net covered top on my chicken pen. Have never had any critter get in my pen until now, other than a few chicken snakes.
Found a hole that he had dug underneath the wire and treated 2" x 6" at the bottom. Just big enough for him to crawl in. Got it filled back in.
Cleaned out the nest box and filled with clean pine shavings this afternoon.
I have 7 hens and a rooster. Had 7 eggs today, none broken. Maybe now I can go back to getting some good, clean, unbroken eggs.
