I hit pay dirt in Kentucky this morning. I drove up to the farm yesterday and timed it just right. The last storm had just rolled through and I was able to lay eyes on 2 gobblers and a single hen feeding in a freshly planted corn field. I watched them until they disappeared over a rise as they were headed to roost. I had a good idea they would be close so I slipped in before daylight and set up on edge of a cow pasture. To my surprise neither turkey gobbled on the roost so I had no idea where they were. After it was good light I saw the hen fly down on the neighbors. I could just catch glimpses of her through the fence row. I started calling to her thinking the gobblers might be with her. I made 4 or 5 sequence of calls with an aluminum pot and nothing. Hen was not interested and the gobblers didn’t respond. I decided I was going to stay put and give it some time. I popped in a mouth call and made a few calls and was immediately answered by one of the gobblers. I gave him a few more calls and he hit every one of them. He’s about 100 yards in the timber behind me and closing fast. I’m in scramble mode because the sun has peeked of the trees tops and has me lit up lake a Christmas tree.

I pick out a big tree to the east of me and make a quick move there. By the time I get to it the turkey gobbles and he’s close. I never sit down as I have the tree between me and the turkey. Standing gives me the best view of his location so I just peek out from edge. I finally spot him at 15 yards headed towards the pasture. He goes behind some thick stuff and I took advantage of getting my gun shoulder. I’m waiting for him to clear that thick stuff when all sudden his head parascopes over the top. He sees me but he’s looking dead into the sun. I make a slight adjustment to line up the red dot and let the Franchi eat. Fine first morning in Kentucky!
