If you buy a leupold scope with a cds dial, can you just put a plain old cap on it like a regular scope?

No, it doesn't have threads on it for a turret cap to screw onto

As gun doc said, no. But the new models such as the VX3HD have zero lock turrets. So you'll be golden.

If you got a CDS scope, do as their instructions say and get the free custom dial. It's legit and simple to dial to yardage

Or learn to dial moa and forget the custom turret that's dependent on temp and elevation That’s what I do. My son wants a new scope on his hunting rig. Trying to teach him how to shoot without fancy do-dads. It’s hard to find a decent scope with a plain reticle. I just don’t trust exposed turrets, it’s just something else to go wrong or get screwed up and not notice. I realize it’s all a gimmick to sell scopes, I just don’t know how I managed all these years without CDS dials and MOA turrets???? SMDH???

Or learn to dial moa and forget the custom turret that's dependent on temp and elevation I have a few scopes with turrets and prefer the MOA dial over the bullet/load specific dials.

Or learn to dial moa and forget the custom turret that's dependent on temp and elevation Depends on where ya hunt. I know how to dial, this is just quick and easy. Temps not too much of a factor and so far elevations been no issue and I hunt Oregon, Alaska, and Washington pretty regular. Bow hunting’s more fun

The dial doesnt just freely spin as you walk. return it back to zero when your done shooting and its GTG
Only accurate rifles are interesting.

Nothing wrong with CDS, however.... This is proof that Leupod's marketing is working.
Why use Kentucky windage when you can range and dial? Well, I can think of a lot of reasons such as what if you don't need the dial to shoot 400 yards? Which is faster?
The real world application of this topic is where these conversations fall off the grid. Are we talking about being on some bags or hanging it out the window of the shooting house? Are we talking about walking across Wyoming and one runs up on a distant hill? You gonna throw your pack down and do work.... or play with your calculator and fiddle with your dials? Oh, wait. He gone.
If you are in a fixed position you can do a dope card but if you are strolling around maybe the CDS is quick. Maybe you don't have any trouble getting within a couple hundred yards of whatever you are shooting at. There's that too.
No government employees were harmed in the making of this mess.

Guys, we are looking at this all different. I’m not talking long range bench shooting. My son shoots a 243. The longest shot at peak conditions is 250 yards. There is no reason to have a mil spec reticle and kick ass turrets. If he can’t hit it with a duplex reticle, what good are the gimmicks? Now if we were shooting 800yards, Yeah. For a deer hunting rifle in Alabama, a plain Jane scope will do just fine.

I’m needing to hit a 12 year old to solidly and consistently hit a 150 pound animal at 100 yards or so. Not shoot a dime at 500 yards. If that was the case, CDS, turrets, and reticles are all game changers.

The CDS turrets don't stand off the scope as much as the others but, if ya don't want the option to dial just buy a scope without it? The CDS works well though. I've only shot out to 600 to see if it was correct and it was but a friend in Eastern Oregon dropped a muley at 750 with his set-up...

The freedom line would probably do all your son needs.

The freedom line would probably do all your son needs. That’s what we went with, but leupold is redoing models and such. Was sort of hard to find a freedom with no dial and duplex. I like the new vx-3hd that has the push button on the turret. I was worried he might turn the CDS dial inadvertently, and not return it to zero. I don’t understand the scopes with the Tri Moa reticle and the CDS turrets. I have a scope with a BDC reticle, never used it. In my hunting and shooting situations, I just don’t have a use for it. Now if I went somewhere out west or somewhere I could stretch it out, I would definitely explore my options. The farthest I have shot a deer was 330yards. That was a fluke situation. Most of my shots have been well under 100.

My scope with CDS has a duplex reticle. The problem with the CDS dial unless they changed it is that the one that comes with the gun is generic which is fine but there’s no zero stop. The custom Dial stops at zero but you have to shoot it through a chronograph and all that fun stuff but it’s accurate. I’m not a long range shooter, don’t forget to post a picture when he shoots his deer
