A deputy pulled me over a short while ago. I was in an old truck I'm tinkering on. I was following my wife home and we were crossing a 4 lane and turning left on a four lane road. He said I wasn't supposed to pull into the far lane, that it was an illegal turn. So be it, write me a ticket.
Anyway that's not the issue. When he turned his lights on I could see a signal light and dollar general ahead. Visiblity was bad, it was raining, and there was a hill I didn't think it was wise to pull over in the rain on 431 so I very slowly drove to the dollar general. Maybe a quarter mile I know less than a half anyway
Parked the truck, I opened the door because the power window may or may not work. He started chewing me up and down because I didn't pull over immediately, and I opened my door instead of rolling down the window. I just took it like man. At one point he said I could have gotten shot. I never made one threatening action to him.
Any way if you don't feel comfortable can you slowly drive to somewhere you do? If your window doesn't work, is it wrong to open the door?
It really pissed me off that he acted that way. I may call the sheriff and tell him the a$$hole wasn't even wearing a mask. 😃 Well, glad you didn't act like the ones who helped throw the election. Use the system the way it should. Good luck.

I as a retired traffic commander will say file a complaint, due to his action's it should be on video. Also ask for a copy of the incident video, it's public record. I would request a meeting with the Sheriff or Chief Deputy, so that he could show you a video of the incident. I as a supervisor held my officers at a much higher standard than most. Poor action's are just a pattern of what has taken place. We are in a new era of law enforcement. Also if you are turning onto a 4 lane, and both lanes are clear, who cares what lane you take, as long as it isn't the wrong way on the one way. sorry for the long rant, I do not like aggressive officers, they tend to screw themselves over time. I wish all of them would think like You and we would all be alright with a little common sense 👍🏻

In that situation I would call the police as I am driving and explain to the dispatch that I do acknowledge the officer, but that I am going to a location with better lighting AND that my drivers window does not roll down.

I’d be highly surprised if Henry county sheriffs deputies have body cams. Call the sheriff. He used to be a game warden in Henry county.

He said was driving slowly, if he was driving 35mph it would less than 30 seconds to drive 1/4 mile. No way he is getting dispatch on the phone to explain the situation in time. I agree that hazard lights would be a good idea.
Hopefully the conversation with the sheriff will go well but I would definitely have schedule one.

He handled the functionality of the traffic stop poorly and should be counseled on that, but NO EXCUSE for the you could have got shot comment

I will not initiate a traffic stop unless it’s in a safe area. Common sense goes a long ways.

After he got off his power trip, I’d explain the situation and reasoning behind the actions you took. May or may not work. Or, just show him your cc permit when you hand him your license and insurance. . I would try to explain, but first . . . You can turn on your hazard lights and that will indicate to him that you acknowledge him but are getting to a more lighted or safer location. Still no excuse for him being a jerk wad. . Yep, turn you hazards on to indicate you acknowledge him. I was told by a few former officers of what they do: sit tight don't make any sudden moves or reach for anything, put my hands on the steering wheel with my palms up and wait for him/her to come to the window. Let them get a look to make sure everything is cool for them, then proceed. You could then indicate to him your window doesn't work, etc. I still think it may have been handled better by him. A nice chat with the Sheriff may be in order.

Opening the door is not good, when pulled over. If the window doesn't work, let him approach you. Then you indicate that the window doesn't work and let him tell you what he wants next. In the meantime, he has the opportunity to look at your hands before he may ask you to open the door.

I had a county deputy pull me over back in September after I brake checked him twice at night  he basically made the same comment as the deputy that pulled coldtrail over about almost getting shot, I didn't even open my door as coldtrail did. I did file a complaint with the county sheriff and chief deputy the next day. I brake checked the deputy that pulled me over for a reason. Long story.
It takes a long time to grow an old friend.

Yep, opening the door is no bueno. I got drawed on back in the 90’s going to work at 0500 in a work car that the window wouldnt roll down on. I opened the door, he drew on me and hollered, “let me see you hands!” I stuck them out side faster than Bruce Lee could have!
