Fact: old guys can be just as mouthy as young ones. And getting the jump on a 3:1 shootout is easy if the 3 don't know the 1 is planning to shoot.
As to the dementia angle, my grandmother in her later days could go from "sweet as banana pudding" to yelling at my grandpa that she was going to kill him when he went to sleep... with zero provocation. It was worse when she was tired. For a man who reportedly hunted every day of duck season, I imagine he was wore out pretty well. Could be a contributing factor.
The fact that his family isn't speaking out right now says more to me than anything else.
